About the organization
UC Santa Cruz is a public university combining the experience of a small, liberal arts college with the depth and rigor of a major research university. Known for innovation and experimentation, the campus is renowned for its beauty.
The Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS) provides campus-wide coordination and leadership of student success programs, activities, and initiatives. The Student Success and Equity area includes Retention and Validation (R&V) units—Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), Services for Transfer Reentry and Resilient Scholars (STARRS), and African, Black, and Caribbean Student Success (ABC SS)—which offer holistic support by acknowledging students’ lived experiences and fostering a sense of belonging.
- EOP supports first-generation, low-income, and historically marginalized students in achieving academic, professional, and personal goals.
- STARRS advances social mobility for transfer, re-entry, and independent students, including those with experiences such as military service, parenting, foster care, homelessness, incarceration, or family trauma.
- ABC Student Success advocates for the holistic success of African, Black, and Caribbean students, addressing equity gaps and improving retention and graduation rates.
Learning Support Services (LSS) provides course-specific group and individual tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, and Writing tutoring for all undergraduate students. Programs are grounded in equity-minded pedagogy and serve nearly 11,000 students annually across all academic divisions. LSS collaborates with EOP, STARRS, the Disability Resource Center, HSI Initiatives, and campus colleges.
