Overview
At The New York Foundling, we support our neighbors on their paths to stability, strength, and independence through a whole-person, whole-family, and whole-life approach. As part of our comprehensive services for youth in foster care, the Tutor supports students in preparing for and excelling in their academic pursuits.
Responsibilities
- Support a caseload of 15-18 students across any subject where they need help.
- Conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions every week (or bi-weekly as part of an academic plan).
- Meet students 1x/week for 60-90 minutes in their home or nearby community to provide academic support and mentorship (virtually based on current context).
- Engage students during sessions and perform outreach in support of students facing barriers to attend.
- Maintain a regular schedule of tutoring sessions.
- Promptly report non-tutoring-related concerns to appropriate program and agency staff and assist with referrals to support services.
- Collaborate with students and families to obtain academic records needed for program evaluation.
- Work with partner agency stakeholders including case planners, education specialists, coaches, etc. to keep them updated on student progress and remove barriers to academic success.
- Develop lesson plans and practice materials during time not spent in tutoring sessions.
- Participate in training and self-study to ensure content knowledge remains effective, efficient, and up-to-date.
- Participate in weekly coaching with supervisor to discuss student needs and identify areas for professional development.
- Participate in group meetings and consultations as well as 1:1 coaching.
- Engage in group discussions to troubleshoot specific student issues and share teaching methods.
- Perform outreach to students to create a tutoring schedule and develop strategies to enhance engagement.
- Spend in-office time developing teaching materials such as worksheets, study guides, and course material outlines.
- Adhere to program protocol and procedures and maintain clear, concise, and accurate documentation.
- Ensure timely submission of contacts, incidents, and reports.
- Maintain confidentiality of client records.
- Be available when students are available (including evenings and potentially one weekend day), and willing to travel extensively.
- Show patience and positivity, engaging and building a collaborative relationship with students.
- Identify and reflect on what went well or areas for improvement in tutoring sessions and effectively integrate new strategies and feedback into instruction and engagement strategies.
- Willingness to provide coverage support as needed to peers/team members.
- Travel outside of assigned borough/region based on client needs.
- Respond to email correspondences in a timely manner.
- Be available for regular and punctual time and attendance.

- Engage with support departments to ensure appropriate and timely hiring, performance management, investigation, discipline, suspension, and restructuring decisions concerning direct reports.
Qualifications
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Email, and Data entry systems.
- Able to deliver effective instruction across all core subjects.
- Caregious and patient, and sensitive to the needs of our target population.
- Proficient in or able to quickly learn a wide range of academic subjects at multiple grade levels.
- Able to develop and tailor lessons that fit the particular strengths of each student.
- Capable of working in a group setting, and of giving and receiving critical feedback.
- Detail oriented, responsible, and punctual.
- Previous tutoring or teaching experience preferred.
- Candidates who are bilingual in Spanish are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to safety.
- Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree from a U.S. accredited educational institution or Credential Evaluation for a non-U.S. educational institution.
- Salary Range: $29.73/Hour + $2.09/Hour Education Additive (as applicable) + $1.92/Hour
- Bilingual Additive (as applicable)
