About the role

The Senior Engineering Associate performs professional engineering work in the design, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects. This position supports the City of Tucson's Engineering Division by providing technical expertise, project management, and oversight for a variety of municipal engineering initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Design, review, and approve engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates for public works projects, including streets, drainage systems, water and wastewater facilities, and traffic control systems.
• Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers, technicians, and contractors during project implementation.
• Conduct field inspections to ensure compliance with engineering standards, city codes, and project specifications.
• Coordinate with other city departments, government agencies, consultants, and stakeholders to facilitate project planning and execution.
• Prepare and present reports, recommendations, and project updates to management and city officials.
• Assist in the development and administration of contracts, bids, and requests for proposals (RFPs).
• Ensure projects adhere to budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
• Stay current with engineering best practices, industry trends, and regulatory changes affecting municipal infrastructure.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program.
• Minimum of four (4) years of professional engineering experience, with at least two (2) years in municipal or public works engineering.
• Valid Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Arizona or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, or other engineering design software.
• Strong knowledge of municipal engineering principles, including roadway design, stormwater management, and utility systems.
• Experience with project management, including budgeting, scheduling, and contract administration.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Valid Arizona driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) and hydraulic modeling tools (e.g., HEC-RAS, SWMM).
• Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations governing public infrastructure projects.
• Certification in project management (e.g., PMP) or related professional credentials.
