About the Role

The Engineer is primarily responsible for engineering support of the Reliability applications, processes, and the associated data and solution integrity. This includes supporting State Estimator functionality in the SPP and ERCOT regions as well as other reliability tools used in Transmission Operations. The role focuses on monitoring and addressing data/model quality issues and maintaining acceptable solution quality to support Real-time system reliability. The engineer will also handle continuous capital and overhead work modeling in the State Estimator.

The engineer will be part of a 24x7 On-Call support staff rotation to provide non-stop support to the System Control Center, requiring availability and responsiveness during on-call periods.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and analyze EMS powerflow solution iteration results.
• Work with various applications used in the daily reliability and operations of the electric grid.
• Assume modeling responsibilities for an assigned area in accordance with AEP’s capital and O&M work plan.
• Monitor and address data/model quality issues to maintain solution integrity.
• Coordinate work activities within the team and across departments to complete routine engineering tasks.
• Provide training and guidance to lower-level employees.
• Develop, review, or present technical reports such as improvement requisitions, studies, and analyses.
• Resolve routine problems and initiate solutions, including identifying issues beyond normal routine.
• Use scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts) for budget and planning activities.
• Initiate corrective action when project objectives are not met.
• Network with peers inside and outside AEP to build consensus and resolve conflicts.
• Understand AEP’s organizational structure and the role of your unit, including budgeting and approval processes.
• Apply economic analysis techniques in problem-solving and understand utility regulation and financing.

Requirements

• Experience in Energy Management Systems, system reliability, grid operations, planning, and modeling is a plus.
• Intermediate-level knowledge in applying engineering theory and analytical techniques to solve diverse problems.
• Competency in analytical techniques to handle assignments of moderate complexity.
• Ability to understand interrelationships between systems and component equipment.
• Ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including teamwork, conflict resolution, and consensus-building.
• Decision-making ability within established policies and procedures, with awareness of risks.
• Proficiency in developing input for cost forecasting and project planning.

Qualifications

Engineer Associate SG6 (Entry Level):

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred.
• Individuals with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology may qualify if they obtain a certified Professional Engineering (PE) license.

Engineer SG7:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program with two or more years of related engineering experience.
• Individuals with a Master’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program may qualify for entry at this level.
• Individuals with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology may qualify if they obtain a certified Professional Engineering (PE) license.
• Acceptable alternative: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET-accredited Bachelor’s program.

Engineer Senior SG8:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program with four or more years of related engineering experience.
• Alternatively, two years of related engineering experience with a Master’s degree or PhD in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred.
• Individuals with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology may qualify if they obtain a certified Professional Engineering (PE) license.
• Acceptable alternative: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET-accredited Bachelor’s program.

Electrical Engineering background is strongly preferred.

Location

This role is on-site in New Albany, Ohio or Corpus Christi, Texas.

Pay

• Engineer Associate SG6: $84,000–$90,000 per year
• Engineer SG7: $89,000–$110,000 per year
• Engineer Senior SG8: $110,000–$129,000 per year
