Truck Transport Technician

About the Role

Burnside Truck Center, a member of the Cherubini Group of Companies, is seeking a Truck Transport Technician to join our team in Dartmouth, NS. This role involves the accurate inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a variety of heavy commercial and industrial vehicles and equipment. Work is primarily performed in the shop under the supervision of the Shop Foreman, with occasional off-site service calls.

Responsibilities

• Diagnosing and Repairing: Diagnose and repair various types of heavy equipment, requiring a broad understanding of different makes and models. Work in a fast-paced environment with an emphasis on accuracy in diagnostics and repairs.
• Safety: Adhere to safety guidelines and procedures, both in the shop and during off-site service calls. Participate in ongoing safety culture initiatives led by our JOHS committee.
• Work Order Management: Review parts and labor components upon completion of work orders. Ensure accurate daily labor punch times and verify parts charged to work orders with the parts department. Submit work orders in a timely manner to maintain workflow.

Job Duties

• Inspect and diagnose issues on various makes and models of trucks, trailers, and other equipment.
• Perform repairs on trucks, trailers, and other equipment.
• Prepare accurate work estimates of labor and part costs.
• Manage labor times, job details, and parts and labor on work orders.
• Perform motor vehicle inspections and record information accurately.
• Relay accurate information to customers in a professional manner.
• Perform off-site service calls.
• Properly use shop equipment (e.g., forklift, overhead crane, tools).
• Follow shop safety guidelines for lifting heavy objects (50–100 lbs), using provided equipment (e.g., drum dollies, overhead crane) and assistance from other technicians.
• Stand for extended periods and bend as required.
• Participate in on-call duties and weekend shifts on a rotational basis.
• Maintain shop cleanliness and perform related duties as required.

Requirements

• Minimum 3–5 years’ experience as a heavy-duty mechanic for trucks and trailers.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Knowledge of the theories and operating principles of spark ignition and diesel engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and heavy-duty power trains.
• Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the trade.
• Ability to use shop scan tools and apply diagnostic information to repair vehicles.
• Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions, and interpret technical manuals and specifications.
• Proficiency in the use of a variety of hand and power tools related to the trade.

Work Conditions

• 24/7 availability may be required.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Travel to off-site locations may be required.
• Safety equipment required, including steel-toed safety boots and safety glasses/goggles.
• Overtime as required.
• Exposure to hazards associated with the trade.
