Tribal School Registered Nurse

About the Role

Under general supervision, plans, directs, and evaluates total health care and nursing functions in accordance with established philosophy. Provides culturally competent, strength-based community nursing services to children and families with children served by Muckleshoot Tribal School (MTS), assisting them to access the health care system, use community services appropriately, and reach self-sufficiency.

Defines and maintains the standards of nursing practice within MTS; assesses the quality of care rendered. Initiates the development of policies and procedures that govern nursing services and other related services. Observes and supports MTS policy. Serves as spokesperson for nursing matters and represents MTS with professional nursing and related organizations. Participates in appropriate meetings and committees.

Responsibilities

• Provides the best possible nursing care by planning, organizing, and directing nursing functions within MTS.
• Explains procedures and treatments to parents, staff, and families to gain cooperation, understanding, and allay apprehension.
• Initiates and implements patient care plans; maintains acceptable standards of patient care.
• Provides training and consultation with staff regarding health and developmental needs of individual students; participates in staff development activities.
• Administers treatments and medications skillfully and correctly.
• Maintains accurate and complete recording, reporting, and documentation in medical records.
• Participates in planning changes and improvements for MTS safety programs.
• Supports and enforces infection-control policies and procedures.
• Consistently maintains and enforces confidentiality.
• Displays concern and initiative; is resourceful and calm in emergencies.
• Cooperates and maintains good rapport with other MTS staff, visitors, and the community.
• Supports collaboration with healthcare professionals serving the community.
• Develops, facilitates, and participates in student education activities, health fairs, and outreach programs.
• Maintains the privacy and confidentiality of all protected health information in compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Performs a wide range of office and field duties as needed, which may or may not be related to regular responsibilities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Registered Nursing degree program.
• Current and valid Washington State Registered Nursing license.
• Two (2) years of clinical experience.
• Current and valid Washington State Driver’s License, required at the time of appointment or as set by the Tribe.

• Medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.
• Equipment, supplies, and materials needed for medical treatment.
• Basic laboratory procedures including preparation and screening.
• Health care system structure and function.
• Infectious disease management, control, and safety standards.
• Effective supervision and medical record documentation.
• Basic pharmacology.
• Human systems (wellness, illness, growth and development, nutrition, behavioral, psycho-social, and family systems).

Working Conditions

Work is performed mostly in a school setting. The employee is continuously required to talk, see, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, walk, bend, balance, crouch, kneel, reach, and twist; and frequently use both hands to finger, handle, or feel objects including medical instruments, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift, move, push/pull, and/or carry up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close and far acuity and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
