Triage Nurse Responsibilities

• Assesses patients, determines the severity of conditions, and prioritizes care based on symptom urgency
• Performs telephone triage, patient education, handles physician and pharmacy calls
• Affords assistance in setting up appointments, arranging hospital tests or admissions
• Completes paperwork including refilling medications, ordering lab tests, x-rays, school/work notes, FMLA, etc.
• Assesses patients, determines priority, refers for emergency care
• Counsels patients on lifestyle modifications, medication regimens, side effects, and interactions
• Communicates follow-up appointments, ancillary and/or pre-operative testing and scheduling to patients and office coordinators
• Coordinates ordering of tests/procedures with other clinical staff
• Responds to patient questions and concerns as liaison between physician and patient
• Develops office protocols and training documents
• Reports all test results to the patient as directed by the physician

Triage Nurse Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
• Illinois RN or LPN license
• BLS certification
• One year of working experience as a nurse
• Athena EMR experience preferred
• OB/GYN experience preferred, but not required
