About the role

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking experienced Medical Assistants to join our Ambulatory Clinical Care operation. This position supports one or more of our 12+ pediatric specialty divisions, providing assistive care to patients and their families. Incumbents facilitate efficient delivery of ambulatory patient care, support licensed staff, and assist with basic healthcare and clerical functions as a multi-skilled auxiliary worker.

Responsibilities

  • Handle incoming medical calls; support patient care coordination by engaging with patients, families, clinical teams, and other stakeholders, conducting chart reviews, and problem-solving to address patient needs efficiently over the phone.
  • Alert care providers to significant changes in patient conditions or other critical information.
  • Place outbound calls, under physician direction, to relay results, reminders, and care instructions to patients and families.
  • Process medication refill requests per division-specific protocol.
  • Deliver patient education as directed and in line with Medical Assistant training, guidelines, care process models, and clinical guidelines.
  • Assist providers and clinical staff with patient-related paperwork and other division-specific administrative functions.
  • Ensure strict adherence to patient privacy and confidentiality standards.
  • Actively participate in customer service efforts and quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 30 days of hire).
  • Verifiable completion of one of the following:
    • State-approved EMT course.
    • One year of Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting.
    • Medical Assisting education program.
    • University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program.

Preferences

  • Proficiency in computer operations, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Ability to navigate customer electronic medical record (EMR) software.
  • Strong typing and data entry skills with accuracy and speed.
  • Excellent verbal communication and customer service etiquette over the phone.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic technical issues and assist in problem-solving.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program or equivalent (EMT).

Working Conditions

  • Work Environment: Nearly continuously in an office environment.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Nearly continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking.
    • Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking.
    • Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

The staff member must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served, including principles of life span growth and development, and the ability to assess data regarding patient status.

Pay

$18.50 to $24.96 per hour.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week. Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:15 PM (start and end times may vary within this timeframe). Regular and punctual attendance is required.
