About the role

The Division of Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking an experienced Medical Assistant to join our ambulatory clinical care operations as a Triage Medical Assistant. The division consists of 12 full-time faculty, 2 part-time faculty, 6 full-time APPs, 7 clinical nurses, and 1 research medical assistant that practice primarily at Primary Children’s Hospital (PCH) and Primary Children’s Outpatient Services Building, PCH Lehi.

The Triage Medical Assistant provides assistive care to patients, facilitates the efficient delivery of patient care, supports the professional role of the licensed staff, and provides support and assistance as directed by licensed staff in rendering basic healthcare to the patient. Assists with clerical functions as a multi-skilled auxiliary worker.

Responsibilities

  • Handle incoming medical calls; support patient care coordination by engaging with patients, families, clinical teams, and other stakeholders, conducting chart reviews, and problem-solving to address patient needs efficiently over the phone.
  • Alert care providers to significant changes in patient conditions or other critical information.
  • Place outbound calls, under physician direction, to relay results, reminders, and care instructions to patients and families.
  • Process medication refill requests per division-specific protocol.
  • Deliver patient education as directed and in line with Medical Assistant training, guidelines, care process models, and clinical guidelines.
  • Assist providers and clinical staff with patient-related paperwork and other division-specific administrative functions as directed.
  • Assist with scheduling of high-priority or urgent patients as directed by providers.
  • Review provider schedules and assist with filling clinic openings working from a patient waitlist/priority list.
  • Maintain provider-generated patient waitlist.
  • Assist with scheduling of procedures, specifically bronchoscopies.
  • Ensure strict adherence to patient privacy and confidentiality standards.
  • Actively participate in customer service efforts and quality improvement initiatives.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work.

Requirements

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 30 days of hire).
  • Verifiable completion of one (1) of the following:
    • State approved EMT course.
    • One (1) year of Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting.
    • Medical Assisting education program.
    • University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program.

Skills

  • Proficiency in computer operations, including using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Ability to navigate electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Strong typing and data entry skills with accuracy and speed.
  • Excellent verbal communication and customer service etiquette over the phone.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic technical issues and assist in problem-solving.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (start and end times may vary within this timeframe).

Pay

Pay rate range: $18.16 - $24.96 per hour.
