About the role

The Trenchless Geotechnical Team Lead will report to the Trenchless Services Engineering Lead, contributing to the Trenchless Program by applying geologic information to engineering and design practices, leading geotechnical exploration campaigns, evaluating subsurface conditions, determining solutions for problematic geologic conditions, and integrating geotechnical data into project deliverables.

  • Lead and execute comprehensive geotechnical investigations for trenchless projects.
  • Direct and oversee subcontracted geotechnical drilling crews for exploratory campaigns.
  • Perform field soil and rock logging and testing, collect geotechnical data, and coordinate laboratory programs.
  • Analyze data and generate reports.
  • Generate geotechnical data reports and engineering reports.
  • Support geotechnical data management using OpenGround and gINT software.
  • Aid in geotechnical analyses of subsurface conditions, including calculating subsurface parameters.
  • Assess subsurface conditions and lead efforts for incorporating geological and geotechnical data into critical design and construction determinations.
  • Monitor and report on daily construction activities, interface with construction contractors, and communicate with clients and team members off-site.
  • Travel as necessary, including longer term travel, to perform field work.
  • Manage workload and delegate responsibilities to other geologists or geotechnical professionals.
  • Lead and manage a team of geotechnical-focused individuals, providing mentorship and performance reviews.
  • Plan, resource forecast, cost estimate, schedule, and manage risk for all geological and geotechnical initiatives.

Responsibilities

Primary day-to-day tasks include:

  • Completing field work to direct and oversee subcontracted geotechnical drilling crews for exploratory campaigns.
  • Performing field soil and rock logging and testing.
  • Collecting geotechnical data.
  • Coordinating laboratory programs.
  • Generating reports.
  • Managing and maintaining geological data.
  • Interpreting subsurface conditions and leading efforts for incorporating pertinent geological and geotechnical data into critical determinations during design and construction.
  • Creating geological cross sections to be utilized in HFIAs.
  • Assisting in generating design reports.
  • Advancing capabilities in software programs to assist in generating trenchless deliverables.
  • Supporting other business groups within the broader HDR organization.
  • Supporting Trenchless engineering, design, and field services efforts across all regions and business groups.

Qualifications

  • Four-year degree with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or other related field required.
  • Minimum of 7 years experience.
  • Professional registration, license, or certification may be required based on role.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Good leadership and organizational skills.
  • Attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel, gINT Software Products, ArcGIS, AutoDesk.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Travel is required.
  • PE and/or PG credentials.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ASTM Standards for geotechnical concepts and subsurface material classification(s) based on various testing methods.
