Primary Responsibilities
- Utilize experience and expertise to apply geologic information to engineering and design practices.
- Lead, coordinate, and execute geotechnical exploration campaigns.
- Evaluate subsurface conditions for impacts to feasibility of design and construction.
- Determine recommendations for solutions to problematic geologic conditions.
- Interface with the broader team to integrate geotechnical data, concepts, and considerations into project deliverables.
- Perform field work to direct and oversee subcontracted geotechnical drilling crews for the exploratory campaign.
- Complete field soil and rock logging and testing, collect geotechnical data, and coordinate laboratory programs.
- Analyze data and generate reports.
- Generate deliverables using OpenGround and/or gINT software, such as boring logs and cross sections to be included on design drawings.
- Manage and maintain geological data quality.
- Perform geotechnical analyses of subsurface conditions, including calculating subsurface parameters required in geotechnical models such as hydraulic fracture and inadvertent returns analyses (HFIAs).
- Audit and interpret subsurface conditions to assist in making critical design and construction decisions.
- Support geotechnical data management and quality control.
- Advocate for the Trenchless Services team by supporting other business groups within the broader HDR organization.
- Support Trenchless engineering, design, and field services efforts across all regions and Areas (including Transportation, Water, Federal, Resources, etc. Business Groups).
- Monitor and report on daily construction activities, interface with construction contractors, and communicate effectively with clients and team members off-site.
- Travel as necessary, including longer term travel, to perform field work.
- Lead and manage workload and delegate responsibilities to other geologists or geotechnical professionals as necessary to execute the geotechnical investigation campaigns for trenchless projects.
- Lead and manage a team of geotechnical-focused individuals, that may include geologists, specialists or other engineers.
- Manage workload and accountability, perform routine communications, mentoring, and performance reviews of direct reports as well as organizational required trainings for managers.
- Plan, resource forecast, cost estimate, schedule, and manage risk for all geological and geotechnical initiatives.
Qualifications
- Four-year degree with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or other related field required.
- Minimum of 7 years experience in geotechnical engineering.
- Professional registration, license or certification may be required based on role.
- Experience leading and managing direct reports.
- Experience managing subconsultants.
- Strong communication and listening skills.
- Good leadership and organizational skills.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments.
