About the role

The Trenchless Geotechnical Team Lead will report to the Trenchless Services Engineering Lead, contributing to the Trenchless Program by applying geologic information to engineering and design practices, leading geotechnical exploration campaigns, evaluating subsurface conditions, determining solutions for problematic geologic conditions, and integrating geotechnical data into project deliverables.

  • Lead and generate geotechnical data reports and engineering reports.
  • Support geotechnical data management using OpenGround and/or gINT software.
  • Aid in geotechnical analyses of subsurface conditions.
  • Monitor and report on daily construction activities.
  • Interface with construction contractors and communicate with clients and team members off-site.
  • Perform geological field tests and interpret lab test results.
  • Create geological cross sections for HFIAs.
  • Support other business groups within HDR.
  • Manage workload and delegate responsibilities to other geologists or geotechnical professionals.
  • Lead and manage a team of geotechnical-focused individuals.
  • Assist in geotechnical analyses and interpretations.
  • Advocate for the Trenchless Services team while supporting additional geological and geotechnical initiatives across multiple business units and sectors.

Responsibilities

Primary day-to-day tasks include:

  • Completing field work to direct and oversee subcontracted geotechnical drilling crews.
  • Performing field soil and rock logging and testing.
  • Collecting and analyzing geotechnical data.
  • Generating reports and delivering geological cross sections.
  • Maintaining field test equipment and presenting field data.
  • Interpreting subsurface conditions and leading efforts for incorporating pertinent geological and geotechnical data into critical determinations during design and construction.
  • Leading and managing workload and delegating responsibilities to other geotechnical professionals.
  • Managing workload and accountability for direct reports.
  • Planning, resource forecasting, cost estimating, scheduling, and risk management for all geological and geotechnical initiatives.

Requirements

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in the OpenGround software.
  • Proven ability to work and communicate successfully in remote work environments.
  • Experience leading and managing direct reports.
  • Experience managing subconsultants.
  • Four-year degree with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or other related field.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years experience.
  • Professional registration, license, or certification may be required based on role.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Good leadership and organizational skills.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ASTM Standards for geotechnical concepts and subsurface material classification(s) based on various testing methods.

Skills

  • Proficiency in gINT Software Products.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Open to travel and extensive hours at times.
  • Outdoor work in remote field locations.

Pay

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education, and geographical location. The targeted salary range for this position (based on experience and location) is $120,182 - $172,810.

Schedule

Travel is required. The role requires extensive hours at times and outdoor work, including onsite reconnaissance, geotechnical drilling, sampling, and logging, and performing trenchless construction oversight and inspection.
