Primary Responsibilities
- Utilize experience and expertise to apply geologic information to engineering and design practices.
- Lead, coordinate, and execute geotechnical exploration campaigns.
- Evaluate subsurface conditions for impacts to feasibility of design and construction.
- Determine recommendations for solutions to problematic geologic conditions.
- Interface with the broader team to integrate geotechnical data, concepts, and considerations into project deliverables.
- Perform field work to direct and oversee subcontracted geotechnical drilling crews.
- Complete field soil and rock logging and testing.
- Collect geotechnical data.
- Coordinate laboratory programs.
- Analyze data and generate reports.
- Generate geotechnical data reports and engineering reports.
- Represent HDR’s Trenchless Services team in geotechnical investigations, site visits, and client meetings.
- Manage and utilize OpenGround and/or gINT software for data management and quality control.
- Create geological cross sections and generate deliverables using the same software.
- Support geotechnical data management and quality control.
- Assess subsurface conditions and interpret impacts to/from trenchless projects.
- Aid in geotechnical analyses of subsurface conditions, including calculating subsurface parameters.
- Interpret subsurface conditions and lead efforts for incorporating pertinent geological and geotechnical data into critical determinations during design and construction.
- Monitor and report on daily construction activities, interface with construction contractors, and communicate effectively with clients and team members off-site.
- Travel as necessary, including longer term travel, to perform field work.
- Monitor and report on daily activities, run geological field tests, interpret lab test results, maintain field test equipment, and present field data.
- Lead and manage workload and delegate responsibilities to other geologists or geotechnical professionals.
- Manage workload and accountability of direct reports and perform routine communications, mentoring, and performance reviews.
- Plan, resource forecast, cost estimate, schedule, and manage risk for all geological and geotechnical initiatives.
Requirements
- Four-year degree with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or other related field.
- Minimum of 7 years experience.
- Professional registration, license, or certification may be required based on role.
- Strong communication and listening skills.
- Good leadership and organizational skills.

- Preferred qualifications include experience in OpenGround software, managing direct reports, managing subconsultants, proficiency in MS Word and Excel, and knowledge of ASTM Standards for geotechnical concepts and subsurface material classification(s).
