Traveling Safety Manager - Not A Remote Position

About the Role

This position is based out of Hannibal, MO and is not remote. The Safety Manager will work with and through management to ensure the safety of personnel and compliance with safety and environmental procedures of local, state, and federal regulations including OSHA, MSHA, and DOT. This role assists in the safe achievement of profitability and productivity requirements through training, observation audits, administration, and support of other Safety Managers, Supervisors, and staff.

The Safety Manager is expected to stay up-to-date on current OSHA regulations and safety knowledge. This position requires travel, with approximately 70% of time spent 'in the field'.

Responsibilities

• Advises the Corporate Office on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions.
• Assists Corporate Safety and Site Superintendent in ensuring compliance and training of safety policies and procedures in line with OSHA, MSHA, and DOT regulations.
• Travels to various locations as needed.
• Works with Site Supervision to anticipate upcoming PPE needs and training.
• Plans and conducts training for employees in work site safety practices, including new hire orientations and job-specific tasks.
• Verifies Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and required work permits (hot work, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, etc.) are completed and hazards mitigated.
• Holds daily safety meetings with employees at various locations; maintains a weekly summary log of meetings and behavioral observations.
• Conducts audits to verify employees are educated in hazard identification and that JHAs are completed correctly (10 audits per week required).
• Maintains safety files, records, and reports.
• Ensures all incidents, near misses, safety infractions, and concerns are reported to the Corporate Office and investigated promptly.
• Performs safety hazard assessments, inspections, and surveys; prepares written reports with recommendations and follows up on implementation.
• Conducts observation audits to improve safe work practices, training, equipment selection, and tools.
• Provides training in areas of deficiency and coaches personnel to identify hazards and implement corrective measures.
• Reports all near misses and incidents to the Safety Director as soon as possible and assists with investigations.
• Attends weekly Supervisor safety training meetings and monthly Safety Manager meetings.
• Assists in the development, evaluation, and upgrading of safety programs.
• Performs other duties as assigned, including supporting the corporate office in non-safety-related tasks.

Requirements

• Experience with OSHA regulatory requirements and training related to construction and industrial operations.
• Minimum of 3 years' experience in a direct Safety role.
• Experience in writing reports and business correspondence, and effectively presenting information to senior management, site supervision, clients, and employees.
• Experience in industrial settings is preferred.
• Class E driver's license required to drive a company vehicle.

Qualifications

• OSHA 30-hour minimum certification; Safety Trainer status preferred.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, maintaining professionalism with staff and clients.
• Adaptable in methods used to complete tasks and motivated to learn new skills.
• Willingness to go the extra mile for the team and work independently.
• Ability to self-schedule and follow directions from management while clarifying responsibilities as needed.

Physical Abilities

• Must be able to fulfill essential job functions in a consistent state of alertness and in a safe manner.
• Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs occasionally.
• Must be able to climb ladders frequently.
• Must be able to work outside in various weather conditions, standing on feet for 8+ hours a day.
• Must be able to see clearly when wearing safety glasses.
• Ability to complete tasks such as loading, unloading, cleaning, and shoveling.
• Ability to safely perform duties related to confined space work.

Schedule

This position requires travel, with approximately 70% of time spent 'in the field'. Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance as determined by management. Must be available and willing to work weekends and holidays as needed to meet business requirements.
