About the Role

JE Dunn, ENR’s #2-ranked Contractor in Correctional Facilities Construction, is seeking individuals to join our traveling team building innovative, efficient, safe, and technologically advanced courthouses and corrections facilities. The Traveling Project Manager 1 - Justice will support the growing portfolio of projects for JE Dunn Justice clients throughout the United States. This role provides overall direction and leadership for an entire project or a portion of a larger, more complex project in collaboration with the Project Superintendent, fully implementing and managing project operations and administration. The position focuses on building and maintaining lasting relationships with clients, design teams, and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

  • Leads all aspects of the company’s safety culture, demonstrating commitment to an injury-free environment and mentoring others. Investigates safety incidents and retrains staff as needed.
  • Manages the JE Dunn prestart process.
  • Supports the preconstruction team with quantity takeoff, trade coordination, scope of work development, scope review, bid package development, schedule development, bid list creation, and bid advertisement.
  • Leads the plan and implementation of the buyout schedule, verifying pricing and scope, identifying successful bidders, providing gap analysis, and managing subcontract issuance.
  • Manages the submittal schedule setup, coordinating priorities with the team, and reviewing/approving shop drawings and samples before submission to architects or engineers.
  • Ensures approved submittals are returned to subcontractors and available to the project team per the project schedule and contract.
  • Coordinates with Logistics to obtain pricing on materials and equipment.
  • Confers with risk management to ensure subcontractor approval and/or bonding requirements, reviewing decisions with the project leader and providing ongoing risk analysis.
  • Coordinates project stakeholders, including subcontractors, owners, field teams, design teams, and vendors. Disseminates change requests for pricing and schedule input, evaluates subcontractor pricing, and prepares/submits change requests for owner/architect approval.
  • Leads meetings such as monthly project reviews, progress meetings, and Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) meetings.
  • Completes monthly subcontractor and owner pay application processes.
  • Prepares the project schedule with the Project Superintendent, utilizing Lean principles. Develops and updates schedules for preconstruction and construction activities, managing materials, labor, and procurement logs.
  • Identifies potential schedule impacts (scope, weather, manpower, changes) and facilitates mitigation plans.
  • Provides written documentation for decisions affecting budget, schedule, legal, quality, and safety, employing current best practices.
  • Delivers regular reporting and analysis to communicate project status and profitability.
  • Prepares monthly cost and margin forecasts with input from the superintendent, reviews with the project team, and participates in budget development. Regularly reviews costs relative to the budget to improve financial performance.
  • Leads the overall project closeout process, including punch lists, financials, subcontracts, warranties, and interfacing with legal counsel as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field. Equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
  • 5+ years of construction management experience.
  • Prior experience working on large or complex Justice/Corrections construction projects (preferred).
  • Valid and unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Willingness to travel and/or relocate as required by project needs.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours to meet project demands.
  • May be exposed to extreme conditions (hot or cold).
  • Assignment location may include project sites and/or office settings.

Skills

  • Ability to build relationships with team members that transcend a single project.
