Traveling GIS Field Technician
About the role
The GIS Technician – Underground Fiber at TelCom Construction is responsible for mapping, updating, and maintaining accurate geospatial records of underground fiber optic infrastructure. This role supports telecom network planning, design, construction, and maintenance teams by ensuring fiber routes, ducts, handholes, and related assets are accurately documented in the GIS system.
Responsibilities
- Update and maintain GIS databases for underground fiber optic networks
- Digitize fiber routes, ducts, manholes, handholes, splice points, and cabinets
- Interpret construction drawings, as-built plans
- Take and upload required photos
- Upload required documents to GIS map locations
- Validate and reconcile field data with design documentation
- Perform spatial analysis to support fiber route planning and expansion
- Cookordination with field engineers and construction teams for data verification
- Maintain attribute data including cable size, fiber count, splice details, and asset IDs
- Ensure compliance with telecom mapping standards and data quality control
- Generate maps, reports, and KMZ files for planning and operations teams
Requirements
- Required Qualifications:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geomatics, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field
- 1–3 years of GIS experience (telecom or utilities preferred)
- Proficiency in ArcGIS or QGIS
- Experience working with fiber network data or utility mapping
- Knowledge of underground infrastructure mapping standards
- Able to read fiber design drawings and as-built documentation
- Understanding of coordinate systems and spatial data accuracy
- Travel is required
- Locating experience preferred
- Valid drivers License
- Able to walk long distances
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Preferred Skills:
- Experience with fiber management systems and network inventory tools
- Familiarity with AutoCAD for interpreting engineering drawings
- Knowledge of spatial databases (e.g., PostgreSQL / PostGIS)
- Basic scripting skills (Python) for GIS automation
- Understanding of telecom standards and right-of-way mapping

Pay
The wage range for Traveling GIS Field Technician is $25.00 - $28.00.
Schedule
May require working with large datasets and tight project deadlines
Work Environment
Field-based GIS work with occasional site visits
Close coordination with telecom engineers, planners, and construction teams
