Traveling Aircraft Mechanic II (Sheetmetal)

About the role

The Traveling Aircraft Mechanic II (Sheet Metal) performs the full range of aircraft maintenance with primary responsibility for sheet metal and structural repair. This includes manufacturing and fabricating aircraft sheet metal parts, panels, doors, etc., from various serviced aircraft. Duties also involve determining repair or replacement requirements, selecting materials and repair methods, laying out, cutting, joining, assembling, and installing sheet metal items.

Responsibilities

• Determines type and extent of repair or replacement required, type of material and repair methods to use.
• Lays out, cuts forms, joins, assembles and installs items.
• Reads and analyzes work requests and applicable specifications or similar work data.
• Develops parts and templates from prints, drawings, or original parts to produce repair parts that are not readily available.
• Plans, lays out, cuts, forms, shapes, and assembles complex sheet metal items.
• Uses developed patterns/layouts, prefabricated templates or old part as a sample, scribes outline on sheet metal and cuts out scribed part using shears, Do-All saw and turret punch.
• Forms metal using cornice brake, punch press, drill press, and similar metal forming tools.
• Finishes and smooths edges of metal sheet after cutting and assembles component sheet metal pieces with rivets, screws, nuts and bolts.
• Aligns, drills and reams material for installation of various types of riveting and takes precautions to protect dissimilar metals.
• Applies necessary protective compounds, special insulating protective tape, plastic cement, fiberglass resins, etc.
• Independently lays out template, transcribes information from template and manufactures double contour parts with configuration in several planes.
• Assembles and fastens fabricated parts by installing bolts, rivets, screws and/or seaming.
• Develops and draws working sketches showing views, sections, or profiles.
• Ensures finished aircraft parts meet quality standards for soundness, strength, appearance in accordance with specification and/or similar requirements.

Requirements

• Valid FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) License
• Two (2) years aviation maintenance experience
• Three (3) years rotary wing aircraft experience
• Two (2) years on assigned Mission Design Series (MDS) aircraft

Qualifications

• Minimum of three (3) years aviation maintenance experience if no A&P License
• Minimum of three (3) years rotary wing aircraft experience if no A&P License
• Minimum of two (2) years on assigned MDS aircraft if no A&P License
• All experience must be within the last five (5) years
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization at this work site
• Must provide own tool and toolbox
• Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds
• May work in maintenance shop or outside and may be expected to work in all-weather conditions
• May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment or electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles

Skills

• Thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal and structural repair and modification
• Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures, and replacement of parts
• Basic knowledge of electrical theory
• Thorough knowledge of aircraft tools including test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes, and shears
• Working knowledge of aircraft logbooks, military technical publications, and maintenance data systems
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical manuals
• Ability to lead small teams and prioritize workload to meet mission requirements

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

• Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day
• Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands
• Must be able to climb, stand, stoop, bend, stretch, crouch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
• Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications
• Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, etc.

Compensation Details

$36.88 per hour
