About the role

As a Traveling Superintendent on Deacon’s Special Projects team, you will lead field operations on grocery and food retail projects across the Pacific Northwest and Mountain West, with Boise as your home base. You will run the day-to-day jobsite, manage subcontractors, enforce quality and safety standards, and partner with the Project Manager to keep every project on schedule and on budget. You will represent Deacon in the field with clients, store operators, and trade partners — and you will set the standard for how we work.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day field operations on grocery and food retail construction projects across the PNW and Mountain West.
  • Manage subcontractors in the field, enforce schedules, and hold trade partners accountable to scope, quality, and safety.
  • Cookordination phased construction in live or partially open retail environments, minimizing disruption to store operations.
  • Partner closely with the Project Manager on scheduling, look-ahead planning, RFI/submittal coordination, and cost control.
  • Conduct daily jobsite walks, maintain accurate daily logs, and lead weekly subcontractor coordination meetings.
  • Enforce Deacon’s safety program and maintain a clean, compliant jobsite at all times.
  • Manage inspections, punchlist execution, and project close-out to ensure smooth turnover to the client.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, store managers, architects, and trade partners.

Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of superintendent experience with a strong focus on grocery, food retail, or supermarket construction.
  • Proven ability to manage construction in live retail environments, including phased scopes and operational coordination with store staff.
  • Solid understanding of construction means and methods, scheduling, and field safety programs.
  • Excellent communicator and relationship builder — comfortable working directly with clients, landlords, and store operators.
  • Willing and able to travel extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest and Mountain West; home base in Boise, ID or nearby.
  • Experience with Procore or similar project management tools is a plus.
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
