Job Details

The Step-Down Unit/Progressive Care/Med/Tele (SDU/PCU) Registered Nurse provides specialized nursing care to patients who require close monitoring and frequent assessment but do not meet criteria for intensive care.

Responsible for delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centered care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Requires strong critical thinking skills, clinical judgment, and ability to manage complex patient conditions in a fast-paced environment.

Perform comprehensive assessments including respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and hemodynamic status. Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms, vital signs, and laboratory results; notify providers of changes in patient condition.

Administer medications safely, including IV medications, per physician orders and hospital policy. Manage and care for patients with devices such as telemetry monitoring, IV drips (cardiac, vasoactive, or insulin infusions), central lines, PICC lines, oxygen therapy, high-flow oxygen, CPAP/BiPAP as appropriate. Implement and evaluate individualized patient care plans. Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, case management, and other disciplines to optimize patient outcomes. Educate patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment plan, medications, and discharge instructions. Accurately document assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the electronic medical record (EMR).

Recognize early signs of patient deterioration and activate rapid response or escalate care as needed. Adhere to infection prevention protocols, fall precautions, and patient safety standards.

Job Requirements

  • Current nursing license with Nursys verification within 30 days prior to start.
  • BLS certification (AHA) required.
  • ACLS certification (AHA) required.
  • Completion of Ascension Pharmacology Exam prior to start and updated every 3 years thereafter with minimum 80% score.
  • Completion of Ascension Medical Surgical Exam prior to start and updated every 3 years thereafter with minimum 80% score.
  • Completion of Ascension Core Competencies including HIPAA, Joint Commission, NPSG, OSHA topics within a year of start and updated every 3 years with minimum 80% or national benchmark passing score.
  • NIH Certification required, updated yearly for Group A, every 2 years for Groups B-F.
  • Completion of Ascension EKG Exam with passing score of at least 80%, updated every 3 years.
  • Completion of Ascension Skills Checklist within one year of start and updated annually for specialty.
  • Documentation of required immunizations and health screenings including MMR, Fit Test, Hepatitis B, Health Statement, 2 Step PPD or IGRA, Varicella, Tdap, and Ascension 12 Panel Drug Screen.
  • Valid Driver's License/State ID matching address on file.
  • Completion of background checks including criminal background, EPLS, and employment verification as per Ascension requirements.

Schedule Information

Shift: 18:00 - 06:30 (12-hour shift)

Unit Specific Information

Care for patients requiring telemetry and frequent monitoring. May float to other med/surg units.

Ascension Onboarding Requirements Education Attestation must be completed and uploaded.
Ascension Nursing Contract Worker Onboarding done onsite.
Ascension Badge Photo required with specific background guidelines.
Influenza Vaccine is optional; exemptions accepted but mask required during flu season.
Positive PPD requires negative chest X-ray and annual TB questionnaire.
Hiring Manager Evaluation is optional post-assignment.
Ascension Name Change Document optional if applicable.
