Job Description & Requirements

Fusion Medical Staffing is seeking a travel Pathologists' Assistant for a 13-week assignment in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The position starts immediately and involves 40 hours per week, 8-hour shifts.

  • Supports pathologists in specimen preparation, examination, and dissection.
  • Ensures proper documentation and processing of specimens.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • One year of recent experience as a Pathology Assistant.
  • Valid license when needed in compliance with any state regulations.
  • Current BLS certification (AHA/ARC).

Preferred Qualifications

  • National certification through ASCP or equivalent such as AMT, AAB, HEW certifications.

Summary

A Pathology Assistant supports pathologists in the preparation, examination, and dissection of tissue specimens for diagnosis. They assist in autopsies, surgical pathology procedures, and laboratory operations, ensuring the accurate and efficient processing of specimens.

Essential Work Functions

  • Perform examination and dissection of specimens, ensuring proper documentation and processing.
  • Describe and sections specimens, applying appropriate fixation and processing techniques for microscopic evaluation.
  • Photograph and document specimens, lesions, and tissue abnormalities for clinical and educational purposes.
  • Ensure proper labeling, accessioning, and tracking of all specimens to maintain accurate patient records.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Implement time management skills to optimize workflow and turnaround times.
  • Adhere to quality control procedures to ensure accuracy in specimen handling and documentation.
  • Aid in proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.
  • Adhere to hospital safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Required Essential Skills

  • Critical thinking, service excellence, and good interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language.
  • Ability to read/comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position, move about, move equipment (50-100lbs), push, pull, and bend.
  • Must be able to work effectively with a variety of personnel (professional and ancillary) to present a positive attitude and professionalism.
  • Must have the ability to grasp, perform fine manipulation, push/pull, and move about when assisting with procedures and/or using department equipment.
  • Must be able to cope with frequent contact with the general public and customers while meeting deadlines under pressure. Must be able to work under close supervision occasionally, as well as working without assistance from other personnel. Must be able to contend with irregular activity schedules occasionally and continuous concentration to detail.
  • Must possess visual acuity and ability to effectively communicate.
