Requirements

  • BLS, ACLS, NIHSS certifications required
  • Driver’s license required at submittal (used to verify 50-mile radius)
  • Must be outside 50-mile radius of facility and not employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any CommonSpirit facility (including CHI and/or Dignity)
  • No artificial nails permitted in patient-care departments
  • Must pass an open-book skills exam with a 90% score during orientation or face contract termination
  • Return-to-office (RTO) policy: up to 7 days per 13-week contract (additional RTO not approved)

Unit Details

  • Unit size: 33 beds
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5 (will transition to 1:6 in June with virtual nursing)
  • Common patient types: young adults through geriatrics with diagnoses including sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex multisystem failure
  • RNs required to titrate drips: Yes
  • Common titratable drips: Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, Insulin
  • Common set-rate drips: IV antibiotics, maintenance doses of IV meds (non-titratable)
  • Charge Nurse on each shift: Yes (will not take patient assignment after transition to virtual nursing)
  • Nurse aids/patient care techs: CNAs available at 1:10 ratio (fluctuates with census); each nurse will have their own CNA after virtual nursing transition
  • Respiratory therapy equipment: BiPAP, Airvo
  • Telemetry: RNs required to read and interpret their own strips
  • Shift hours: 0630-1900 or 1830-0700
  • Scheduling: Unit schedulers assign traveler shifts (no self-scheduling)
  • Weekend requirements: Every other weekend
  • Holiday requirements: As needed to meet unit needs
  • Floating requirements: Can float to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
  • Orientation: First week classroom, followed by 2-12 hour shifts on the floor

Responsibilities

  • Manage high patient turnover, including admissions and discharges within the same 6-hour timeframe
  • Perform bedside shift change report and hourly rounding
  • Collaborate with virtual nurses (post-June transition) for admissions, discharges, patient education, rounding, and care plans
