This position involves primarily working during night shifts, with a schedule of 2030 to 0700 hours, including every other weekend. Job Description The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for collecting and preparing blood samples for laboratory testing. This role includes entering specimen information into the laboratory information system and assisting medical technologists and/or pathologists with designated laboratory tests. Additionally, the MLS will help maintain laboratory equipment and records while adhering to established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards. Key Responsibilities Employs skin puncture and venipuncture techniques to collect blood samples. Follows procedures to obtain samples, ensuring patient information verification, proper labeling of specimen vials, and matching requisition forms to specimen tubes. Safely disposes of contaminated needles and biohazard materials in accordance with applicable laws and policies. Enters patient and specimen information, along with insurance and billing details, into designated systems. Processes specimens following established laboratory guidelines. Organizes and maintains blood-drawing trays, ensuring all instruments are sterile and for first-time use. Maintains a clean and safe working environment, adhering to infection control and hazardous waste protocols. Performs other related duties as required and directed. Qualifications Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is required. Certification from ASCP is required.
