Transporter (Full-Time, Overnights)

Under the direction of the PFM/Transport Supervisor or the Director of Transport Services, performs a variety of duties on both the Menino and East Newton Campus, including transporting patients, medical equipment, and specimens to and from areas within the hospital as assigned. This position also assists in the proper training and orientation of new hires and existing transport staff and is an integral part of the Safety Committee.

Responsibilities

• Transports patients, specimens, equipment, and related items safely and comfortably to and from areas within the hospital in a timely manner.
• Greets patients, families, visitors, and staff in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner.
• Verifies patient identification with the patient and by checking the patient ID band; obtains/verifies first and last name, medical record number, and destination prior to transport.
• Picks up specimens from patient floors and clinic areas and transports them to laboratories in properly sealed containers, ensuring specimens are delivered with the appropriate requisition if required.
• Delivers patient equipment to designated areas, retrieves/cleans equipment, and labels it as "Equipment is Clean." Delivers broken equipment to the appropriate location for repair.
• Carries a pager/radio/headset while on duty and responds to pages or radio calls in a timely manner.
• Maintains a log of all patient transports, documenting names, times, destinations, and specimens/equipment transported; submits the log to the supervisor.
• Closes out trips, signs in/out for lunch and breaks via the automated IVR telephone system, and checks in using the IVR system.
• Records an inventory count of equipment at the end of the day.
• Inspects transport vehicles for safety prior to transport, checking cleanliness, oxygen supply, brakes, handrails, and mattresses; cleans if necessary.
• Performs all duties with a customer service focus, representing the hospital and Nursing department professionally.
• Responds to all service requests via radio, telephone, or personal contact; follows through on unfulfilled requests by contacting the dispatcher or supervisor.
• Refers unanswerable or unfulfilled requests to the supervisor and/or manager.
• Maintains cleanliness and neatness of work and lounge areas.
• Assists in hospital emergency disaster plans, identifying emergency situations and initiating appropriate response actions.
• Completes department charge slips and records transactions into the computerized information system.
• Requests assistance from nurses or aides for transferring/moving patients from wheelchairs to stretchers or beds.
• Transports patients to the Morgue and to and from the Recovery Room.
• Performs dispatcher functions as required.
• Utilizes the hospital’s Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division’s mission.
• Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures, including cleaning stretchers/wheelchairs after transporting patients with "precaution" status.
• Complies with department policies and procedures, as well as standards from DPH, Joint Commission, Fire Codes, OSHA, etc.
• Completes annual mandatory educational requirements, such as safety regulation and infection control reviews.
• Assists in training and orientation of new and existing staff, including participation in the Safety Committee to ensure safe performance of duties.
• Maintains equipment inventory and tracking reports, completing quarterly 12-point safety inspections on all wheelchairs and stretchers.
• Monitors key service areas to ensure quality service through surveys, rounding inspections, and reporting procedures.
• Educates and promotes compliance with safety procedures and regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, FCC, JCAHO, and infection control practices.
• Demonstrates knowledge of computer systems and applications, troubleshooting and resolving equipment and application issues with the Information Systems Department.
• Ensures department quality standards are consistently achieved through collaboration with Nursing, Bed Control, and Support Departments.
• Follows up on service and operational issues to ensure requests are completed efficiently, safely, and timely.
• Builds effective teams, fosters open dialogue, and motivates staff to function as a team.
• Assists in the development and implementation of internal rewards and recognition programs to increase employee engagement and satisfaction.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• 6-12 months of experience as a Patient Transporter in the current Patient Transport Department.
• Requires heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, and standing.
• Effective interpersonal skills to communicate clearly and interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families, visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff.
• Demonstrated ability to speak, read, and write English effectively.
• Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and efficiently to complete assigned work.
• Aptitude and passion for safety; ability to function as a "safety technician."
• Detail-oriented, safety-minded, and responsive to potentially hazardous situations.
• Personal desire to improve the safety record and reduce accidents in the department.

Skills

• Knowledge of computer systems and applications such as Microsoft Office® and related software.
• Ability to educate staff on the proper use of IVR systems, pagers, two-way radios, phones, and other equipment.

Pay

Compensation range: $18.58 - $22.20 per hour. This range offers an estimate based on minimum job qualifications. Factors such as education, experience, and licensure/certifications are considered when making an offer.
