About the Role

We are growing our Commercial Lines Underwriting team, which plays a critical role in our journey toward profitable growth. Our Underwriters are relationship-focused with strong communication skills, motivated, and work in a fast-paced team environment. As an industry-leading carrier working solely through the independent agency system, we seek a highly experienced Transportation Underwriter to join our dynamic team.

Work Location

This position offers both remote and hybrid work options. Candidates within 50 miles of an office location (West Bend, Madison, Appleton) will follow a hybrid schedule. Fully remote candidates (beyond 50 miles) may occasionally travel to an office for team meetings, training, or corporate events.

Responsibilities

• Meet agency profitability and production objectives by underwriting new commercial business, renewal policies, and policy endorsements.
• Evaluate exposures related to individual risks through continued mentoring and integration within the Commercial Underwriter workflow.
• Analyze individual agency and book of business results to identify corrective actions needed to ensure underwriting profit.
• Support the Commercial Enterprise Division and Regional Sales Manager in developing and communicating action plans with agents.
• Assist in establishing written premium goals at the agency and book of business level and promote product benefits through personal visits, calls, and mailings.
• Provide territory performance reports and action plans to leadership as needed.
• Participate in agency meetings, events, and loss control service calls.
• Lead or participate in practice group meetings and coordinate documentation.
• Develop customized reports for loss control representatives to share with accounts.
• Communicate effectively with agencies to gather underwriting information and support premium goal attainment through exceptional service.
• Act as a reference for underwriting support staff, assistant underwriters, and others, providing guidance and mentoring to Underwriter I and II as needed.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience in commercial transportation underwriting.
• Analytical skills and attention to detail.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Mentoring skills.

Preferred Education and Training

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Insurance, or a related field.
• Completion of Associate in Underwriting program and CPCU coursework.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $75,101–$93,876. The actual base pay offered will be based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.
