Transportation Technician

About the Role

Join the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) as a Transportation Technician and help support important surveying and mapping work across the state. This entry-level position provides hands-on experience with the tools and technology used to guide future highway and bridge projects. You will learn the skills that help keep construction projects safe, precise, and operational while supporting transportation improvements that benefit communities every day.

Responsibilities

• Assist in operating surveying instruments to collect measurements for transportation projects.
• Set up and adjust tools such as GPS receivers, electronic total stations, and data collectors.
• Use Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software to convert field information into maps and drawings.
• Perform math and trigonometry computations to check measurements and locations.
• Prepare and update field notes, sketches, and survey records for engineering use.
• Coordinate with team members using hand signals, radios, and verbal communication.

Requirements

• One year of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
• One year of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Must meet the Pennsylvania residency requirement.
• Must be able to perform essential job functions.

Pay

Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin at the starting annual salary of $41,506.00 (before taxes).

Schedule

• Full-time employment.
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework is not available for this position.
