Brief Description

The Transportation Supervisor is responsible for overseeing transportation and logistics operations across multiple branch locations, ensuring the safe, timely, compliant, and cost-effective movement of remanufactured transformers and related equipment. This role plays a critical part in delivering an exceptional customer experience by managing fleet operations, coordinating shipments, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving on-time delivery performance. The ideal candidate is a hands-on transportation leader with strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations, fleet management, carrier relations, and expedited freight operations in a fast-paced industrial or manufacturing environment. This position is a first-shift role, working Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Flexibility may be required to support transportation operations, urgent delivery situations, and business needs outside of standard working hours. Travel is required as needed to support multi-site transportation operations, vehicle fleet activities, customer requirements, and company initiatives across branch locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transportation Operations
    • Lead and oversee daily transportation activities, including routing, dispatching, fleet operations, and shipment coordination.
    • Manage intercompany transfers and direct-to-customer deliveries across all branch locations.
    • Cook up expedited freight, Hot Shot deliveries, and time-sensitive shipments to meet customer commitments.
    • Partner with internal drivers, contract carriers, freight brokers, and third-party logistics (3PL) providers to ensure efficient transportation execution.
    • Manage domestic and international shipments, including flatbed, dry van, LTL (Less-Than-Truckload), FTL (Full Truckload), and small parcel transportation.
  • Compliance & Fleet Management
    • Ensure compliance with all FMCSA, DOT, Hours of Service (HOS), Electronic Logging Device (ELD), and transportation safety regulations.
    • Maintain transportation records and documentation required for regulatory compliance.
    • Oversee preventive maintenance and repair programs for company vehicles to ensure safety, reliability, and DOT compliance.
    • Conduct and promote transportation safety initiatives and best practices.
  • Customer Service & Performance Management
    • Collaborate with Sales, Customer Service, Operations, and Branch Leadership to meet delivery deadlines and support customer requirements.
    • Respond promptly and professionally to customer shipping inquiries, concerns, and service issues.
    • Monitor and improve key transportation performance metrics, including: On-Time to First Promise (OTFP), On-Time Pickup (OTP), On-Time Delivery (OTD).
    • Identify transportation challenges and implement solutions that improve service levels and operational efficiency.
  • Financial & Carrier Management
    • Review and approve freight invoices for accuracy and cost control.
    • Monitor transportation expenses and identify opportunities for cost savings and operational improvements.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with carriers, brokers, and logistics providers.
    • Lead carrier performance reviews and service improvement initiatives.
  • Leadership & Development
    • Hire, train, coach, and develop transportation personnel.
    • Establish performance expectations and ensure accountability for safety, service, and operational excellence.
    • Foster a culture of teamwork, continuous improvement, and customer focus.
    • Partner with the Director of Transportation to support enterprise transportation strategies, operational compliance initiatives, and communication processes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of transportation and logistics experience, preferably in manufacturing, industrial, heavy equipment, or mission-critical delivery environments.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of: DOT/FMCSA regulations, Hours of Service (HOS), Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), Fleet maintenance and vehicle safety programs.
  • Experience managing flatbed and dry van transportation operations.
  • Experience with expedited freight, Hot Shot deliveries, reverse logistics, and international shipping.
  • Proficiency with transportation management systems (TMS), dispatch software, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree, vocational certification, or bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business, Transportation, or a related field.
  • Experience leading multi-site transportation operations.
  • Experience managing carrier contracts and transportation budgets.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and transportation analytics.
