Transportation Supervisor

About the role

This position provides support to the transportation manager/director in supervising the activities related to delivery and backhauls, including training and supervising transportation department associates, ensuring compliance with government regulations, and promoting safety and security within the transportation department.

Responsibilities

• Supervises the daily work and safety of transportation associates, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures, Food Safety Standards, preferred work methods, planned routes, and safe, efficient customer service.
• Ensures transportation associates comply with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies (e.g., DOT, OSHA) and maintains accurate, up-to-date electronic logs.
• Oversees labor hours and consumable supplies within budget.
• Prepares work schedules, including extra work days and shifts as needed.
• Assists with training new associates and cross-training existing associates.
• Directs the proper selection and utilization of company assets to support the delivery department.
• Coordinates required repairs with appropriate departments.
• Reviews delivery functions and productivity reporting; suggests efficiency ideas, cost-reduction measures, and assists with implementing delivery changes.
• Interprets, trains, and enforces company policies, protocols, and procedures, including food safety, DOT, and record-keeping requirements.
• Communicates with warehouse and customer service teams to collaboratively resolve customer or delivery issues.
• Visits customer locations to address issues and assess delivery difficulty.
• Maintains positive associate relations through regular department or pre-shift meetings and open communication channels.
• Monitors associate morale and submits or responds to ideas for improving engagement and enablement.
• Works with the safety manager to aid in training, conducting associate observations, updating preferred work methods, investigating accidents, and performing routine safety inspections.
• Makes recommendations for corrective action or behavior modification where required.
• Performs management functions, including staff selection, development, discipline, performance reviews, and terminations.
• Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and predictable attendance, and works outside normal hours as required to meet workload demands.
• Performs duties of supervised associates and other related tasks as needed (and as qualified).

Requirements

• High school diploma, general education degree (GED), or equivalent; or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
• 2 or 4-year college degree in business management, supply chain management, or a similar major preferred.
• 2-4 years of transportation experience and/or training.

Skills

• Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, DOT rules and regulations, preferred work methods, and standard operating procedures (SOP).
• Proficiency in spreadsheet software and word processing software.
• Ability to make independent decisions in support of company policies and procedures on time.
• Strong engagement and leadership skills for individual and team discussions.
• Problem-solving skills to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Ability to apply relevant policies consistently, timely, and objectively.
• Disciplined approach to following established procedures and complying with local, state, and federal regulations.
• Ability to manage pressures and stress associated with deadline-oriented environments and customer service issues.
• Capability to learn SYGMA technology software and programs.
• Proficiency in reading, comprehending, writing, and speaking English.
• Basic math skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations.
• Strong written communication skills for reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Effective presentation skills for responding to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.

Certificates & Licenses

• Class A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred but not required.
• Certificate of DOT regulations training is preferred.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to sit, talk, and hear.
• Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and climb or balance.
• Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and push/pull up to 350 pounds using a 2-wheeled hand cart.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

• Occasionally exposed to wet, hot, extreme cold, and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and confined spaces.
• Works non-traditional business hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call.
• May occasionally travel to other distribution centers or the corporate office for training, meetings, or other business needs.
• Periodically exposed to high, precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
