Transportation Routing Supervisor
Summary
Supervises and performs a wide variety of operational, logistical, and administrative tasks in support of transportation routing activities; establish priorities and timelines for completion of all regular and specialized routing and planning activities to include routing of all schools, summer school programs, interagency schools, and non-traditional schools; coordinates data collection for state and local reports and presentations ensuring accuracy.
Qualifications
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
- Three (3) years of experience in transportation routing, dispatching, or a related field, two (2) years of which shall have been in a lead or supervisory role.
- Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
- Knowledge of school transportation procedures, operations, scheduling, and routing strategies.
- Knowledge of FCPS school locations and street and road systems for the Fairfax County, DC, and Maryland area.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations related to student transportation.
- Skilled in the utilization of computerized transportation routing systems.
- Ability to supervise, train, and lead the work of others.
- Ability to plan and implement efficient routes.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
- Ability to read and interpret maps.
- Ability to collect, synthesize and report data using appropriate computer technology.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Major Duties/Essential Functions
- Supervises and coordinates the work of transportation routing technicians in the planning and development of school bus routes and schedules that are safe, dependable, and efficient.
- Develops more complex routing for new school year, summer school, change in placements, and special programs ensuring completion within prescribed timelines.
- Oversees and assists with the establishment of school boundaries for general education and special education programs, and hearing office placements.
- Audits planned routes to ensure routes are structured/maintained in compliance with applicable regulatory standards, requirements, and generally accepted safety practices.
- Participates in transportation planning activities with Fairfax County related to shuttle programs, School-Age Child Care (SACC), and summer school programs.
- Collaborates with the Department of Information Technology and customer service team to prepare and preserve historical data, developing reports as needed.
- Periodically reviews, updates, and adjusts maps to maintain accuracy; provides upon request.
- Assists with designing and restructuring bell schedules and bell reviews as needed.
- Analyzes alternative and implements solutions to resolve challenging routing issues in collaboration with other routing personnel, departments, and stakeholders.
- Leads routing team in the development of crisis routes to support Fairfax County, as needed.
- Coordinates the collection of data and provides to management and/or senior leadership for presentations, School Board questions, and public requests.
- Provides summer school data to budget for billing; reviews payment for taxis and other vendors; reviews and approves billing for summer and regular school year programs prior to submission for payment.
- Oversees the collection of statistical information for state-mandated reports ensuring timely completion.
- Develops and delivers training to transportation staff regarding processes for routing and planning.
- Attends and participates in various divisionwide transportation-related meetings as a representative of the Office of Transportation Services.
- Provides transportation-related information to families, administrators, and other departments (routing, student assignments, travel zones, and walk zones), and the Virginia Department of Transportation (alternative bus routes in construction zones).
- Leads routing team in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures for transportation routing and planning.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

$70,579 - $122,118
