Transportation Manager II
About the Role
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for direct driver management and supervision of a midsize driver team, ensuring safe and timely movement of freight, load assignment, and best-in-class customer service. The role ensures compliance with DOT regulations and company policies while working with internal and external contacts to plan, route, monitor, and deliver freight. The transportation manager must be available to work any shift—including days, nights, and weekends—to meet operational demands and ensure coverage.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain positive professional relationships with drivers and safety teams to minimize turnover and maximize productivity.
- Fill in for absent personnel and lead special projects aimed at optimizing fleet operations and achieving profitability.
- Manage personnel, including training and orientation of drivers and employees, and assist with internal and third-party (customer) systems.
- Analyze fleet operations and profitability, recommend improvements, determine key performance indicators, and create and present customer-specific reporting and financial analysis.
- Manage inventory, assets, customer pools, and driver assignments to balance equipment in the market.
- Perform administrative duties such as payroll, driver counseling, accident reviews, filing, resolving pay issues, invoicing, and creating operational or financial reports.
- Oversee yard operations, including equipment inspections, part replacements (e.g., mud flaps), repairs, and coordination with maintenance to ensure preventative maintenance and safety-related mechanical fixes are completed on time.
- Resolve service issues, routing/planning challenges, mechanical problems, accessorial pay-related issues, and other daily operational concerns with drivers, customers, and company personnel, including on-call support when necessary.
- Maintain the company’s safety culture through daily driver safety messages, monthly safety briefings, quarterly training, annual reviews, and enforcement of DOT compliance and company safety policies.
- Assign loads and plan, route, and monitor freight movement to ensure safe, on-time service, manage exceptions, and adjust driver ETAs based on pick-up/delivery schedules and road conditions.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2-3 years of experience in transportation/logistics, business administration, account management, and/or equivalent military experience.
- Ability to work across multiple shifts, including nights and/or weekends, as needed.

- Willingness and ability to travel to account and customer locations as required.
- Experience holding people accountable and conducting difficult conversations.
- Ability to perform under stressful, high-pressure conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Transportation/Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field.
- 1-2 years of experience in transportation/logistics, business administration, account management, and/or equivalent military experience.
Pay
The expected starting pay range for this position is $63,000.00 - $78,800.00 per year. This position may be eligible for annual bonus and incentives based on profitability or volumes, in accordance with the company’s bonus and incentive plans.
