Transportation Maintenance Worker (Recruit) 6-E8 (Reach-all Unit) - Bureau of Bridges & Structures

This position is a limited-term appointment lasting up to two years with the possibility of extension or conversion to permanent status, though neither is guaranteed. The role requires full-time hours during the assignment.

About the role

Under the direction of a crew leader, this position operates specialized bridge inspection equipment (Reach-all unit) to perform bridge inspection, repair, and maintenance tasks aligned with Statewide Bridge Maintenance and Preservation goals. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment, ensuring its storage and security, performing basic vehicle and equipment maintenance, and setting up traffic control as needed. The role requires participation in the Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) Work Element program, statewide travel, and availability outside normal working hours for maintenance operations in all weather conditions. The position involves operating a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.

Responsibilities

• Operate specialized bridge inspection equipment (Reach-all unit) for bridge inspection, repair, and maintenance.
• Maintain, store, and secure equipment and vehicles.
• Perform basic maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Set up traffic control for work zones as required.
• Participate in the Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) Work Element program.
• Travel statewide and work outside normal hours, including in adverse weather conditions.
• Operate vehicles or vehicle/trailer combinations with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.

Requirements

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) requirements:
  • For Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 (Recruit): Possession of a Commercial Learner’s Permit at hire; must obtain a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions within 12 months of hire.
  • For Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8: Must possess a CDL at hire. If holding a CDL Group A or B (with or without N or X endorsement), must upgrade to a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions within 12 months of hire.
• Experience:
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 (Recruit): No specific experience required.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker 6: No specific experience required.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker 7: One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year at the Transportation Maintenance Worker 7 level; or one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.
• Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: Must complete the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program, approved by the MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator.
• Must pass pre-employment/pre-appointment drug test, physical (if applicable), and background checks, including criminal and driving records.
• Subject to random drug and alcohol testing during employment.

Salary ranges from the entry-level (6) minimum to the experienced (E8) maximum, with placement determined by education and experience.
