Transportation Maintenance Worker (Recruit) 6-E8 (Jones Garage) - Southwest Region
This position performs maintenance of state trunklines within the right-of-way for an assigned maintenance garage geographic area. The role may involve training to operate any piece of equipment or perform any operation typical of a maintenance garage. The position requires participation in the work element system and travel with crews in assigned geographic areas. Temporary assignments to the Region Maintenance facility or a traveling crew may require region-wide work. The role involves operating a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more during maintenance activities.
Responsibilities
- Maintain state trunklines within the right-of-way for an assigned geographic area.
- Operate various equipment used in a typical maintenance garage.
- Participate in the work element system and travel with crews in assigned areas.
- Work region-wide on temporary assignments to the Region Maintenance facility or traveling crews.
- Operate vehicles or vehicle/trailer combinations with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.
Requirements
- Education typically acquired through completion of high school.
- Possession of a Commercial Learner’s Permit (for Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 (Recruit)) at the time of hire. A CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions must be obtained within twelve months of hire and maintained throughout employment.
- For Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, and E8: Must possess a CDL at the time of hire. If the selected applicant has a CDL Group A or B (with or without N or X endorsement), they must obtain a CDL Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions within 12 months of hire.
- For Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: Satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program, approved by the MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator.
- Must pass a pre-employment/pre-appointment drug test and physical (if applicable), and submit to random drug and alcohol testing during employment.
- Criminal and driving records will be checked if applicable.
Qualifications by Level
- Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 (Recruit): No specific type or amount of experience required.
- Transportation Maintenance Worker 6: No specific type or amount of experience required.
- Transportation Maintenance Worker 7: One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6, with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.
- Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.

Pay
The salary range reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E8) level. Candidates will be reviewed based on education and experience to determine their qualified level.
