About the role

TxDOT's San Antonio District is looking for Transportation Maintenance Technicians to work in our dynamic East Bexar Maintenance Office. If you are interested in a challenging and multi-faceted position, with opportunities for growth, then TxDOT's East Bexar Maintenance Office is for you!

Responsibilities

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Transportation Maintenance Technician I: No experience required.
  • Transportation Maintenance Technician II: 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
  • Transportation Maintenance Technician III: 2 years transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.

Qualifications

  • Education: NONE
  • Experience: As per above.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle. TMT I/II: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment. TMT III: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, at time of application.

Skills

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques.
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports.
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Operating light and heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Operating heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Operating complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • Performing preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completing various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Identifying, analyzing, and implementing solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Maintaining highways and rights-of-way; performing highly skilled roadway repairs; erecting and repairing guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauling materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintaining picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Mowing rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performing plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Communicating effectively.
  • Following verbal and written instructions.
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports.
