Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II, III or IV-East Bexar

About the Role

Performs advanced transportation operations or maintenance support work, including complex maintenance contract inspection, material and process inspection, equipment operation, roadway maintenance, preventative and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergencies, and training other employees. Works independently on assignments, referring unusual issues to the supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Transportation Maintenance Technician I:
  • Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts.
  • Performs basic welding as needed.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement at accident sites and helps stranded motorists.
  • Assists with traffic control, placing and gathering cones, warning signs, and barricades, and flags traffic.
  • Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates light equipment such as front-end loaders, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Completes required reports, including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Assists during emergency situations by sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, and helping the public.
• Transportation Maintenance Technician II:
  • In addition to TMT I duties: Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction sites for compliance with specifications and regulations.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; performs welding.
  • Assists with traffic control and operates light equipment.
• Transportation Maintenance Technician III:
  • In addition to TMT II duties: Inspects traffic control devices and their placement for compliance with specifications and regulations.
  • May serve as a work crew project lead, ensuring work meets specifications.
  • Trains other employees and inspects/processes damage claims.
  • Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on small projects.
  • Maintains highways, rights-of-way, and performs highly skilled roadway repairs.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as motor graders, large excavators, heavy bulldozers, cranes, and asphalt paving machines.
• Transportation Maintenance Technician IV:
  • In addition to TMT III duties: Inspects complex maintenance and construction work, including hot mix overlay, for compliance with safety laws, regulations, and specifications.
  • Reviews and assists in developing traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement, and monitors lane closures.
  • May serve as a work crew project lead.

Requirements

• Education: None required.
• Experience:
  • TMT I: No experience required.
  • TMT II: 1 year of related experience (transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work).
  • TMT III: 2 years of related experience.
  • TMT IV: 3 years of related experience.
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application.
  • TMT I/II: Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement within 120 days of employment.
  • TMT III/IV: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement at the time of application.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in transportation engineering, construction, and maintenance.
• Understanding of plans, specifications, and compliance requirements.
• Familiarity with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Ability to use hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices.
• Skill in operating light and heavy highway equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively, follow instructions, and maintain records.
• Understanding of basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance, and repair procedures.
• Knowledge of industry safety standards and guidelines.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to environmental conditions, including extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, and hazards.
• Required to wear protective gear such as respirators, hard hats, and other devices.
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motion.
• Close visual acuity required for detailed work, operating machinery, and inspecting defects.
