About the role

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations.

Responsibilities

Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities. Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic. Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices. Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites. Move/picks up litter and roadway debris. Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.

  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Qualifications

Transportation Maintenance Tech I: No education or experience required.

Transportation Maintenance Tech II: 1 year experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Skills

Some knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work. Some skill in using basic mathematical fundamentals, prioritizing and organizing work assignments, operating light and heavy highway equipment, and maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Considerable knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance, basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Proficient skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade, using basic mathematical fundamentals, prioritizing and organizing work assignments, operating light and heavy highway equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Subject to environmental conditions, protection from weather but not temperature changes, outside environmental conditions, inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

  • Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other devices.
  • Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia.
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools.
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
