Transportation Maintenance IV

Dakota County is seeking motivated individuals for a permanent maintenance position in the Transportation Department. This role involves operational tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of Dakota County roadways, including snow and ice removal using trucks, loaders, and highway equipment.

Responsibilities

• Operate trucks for snow and ice removal, including hauling sand, mixing sand and salt, plowing, winging snow, sanding, and salting roads.
• Perform routine maintenance such as patching/crack filling bituminous and concrete surfaces, sealing patches, spot graveling, cleaning/sweeping pavement decks, and debris removal.
• Provide 24-hour emergency response to weather events (snow, ice, severe storms, flooding) and traffic hazards (accidents, spills).
• Repair and replace roadway components, including reshaping shoulders, roadbeds, ditches, and back slopes; hauling gravel; mud jacking; and repairing frost boils and flood damage.
• Maintain culverts, catch basins, guard rails, bridges, curbs, gutters, and washouts.
• Conduct storm clean-up, brush and weed control (mowing, spraying, minor clearing), and traffic services (maintaining signs, inspecting roads, assisting with detours).
• Safely operate heavy equipment and perform labor work with other County departments, municipalities, townships, and MnDOT.
• Maintain and clean Transportation facilities and equipment in Empire, Farmington, and Hastings.
• Repair mailboxes as requested by the public following replacement guidelines.
• Attend meetings, classes, and seminars to enhance job performance.
• Perform all other miscellaneous maintenance activities as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
• Two years of experience driving commercial vehicles or operating light/heavy construction equipment in roadway maintenance, landscaping, or construction.
• Valid Class B CDL driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
• Must obtain a valid Class A CDL driver’s license with combination air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire.

Skills & Work Environment

• Knowledge of equipment operation, safety procedures, and MnDOT regulations.
• Skill in using hand tools and small-motorized equipment.
• Ability to read and comprehend equipment, procedure, and safety manuals.
• Ability to coordinate work with peers and follow directions efficiently.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks daily, including frequent lifting (up to 50 pounds) and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, uneven surfaces, dust, noise, and hazards associated with equipment repair.
• Sensory demands include hearing, speech, near/far vision, tactile, and spatial perception.
• Posture and movement requirements: frequent sitting, standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching; continuous arm bending and foot use; static head position for driving.

Pay

Preferred hiring range: $62,650 - $65,408 (depending on qualifications). Full salary range: $52,326 - $81,760.

Schedule

Regular hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Overtime and shift adjustments required based on weather conditions and seasonal construction projects.
