Transportation Maint Tech I, II or III- New Braunfels

About the Role

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work, including maintenance contract and material inspections, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees perform work independently on assignments, referring unusual issues to the supervisor.

This position is located at TxDOT’s New Braunfels Maintenance office, responsible for maintaining around 800 miles of the State's highway and roadway systems throughout Comal and parts of surrounding counties. Transportation Maintenance Technicians play a vital role in ensuring safe throughways for the traveling public by maintaining roadways and signs, debris pick-up, and operating heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

• Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; performs basic welding as needed.
• Uses and moves equipment, tools, materials, and products related to maintenance activities.
• Assists with traffic control: places and gathers cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic.
• Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices; inspects barricades for compliance with standards.
• Maintains highways and rights-of-way: performs roadway repairs, erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
• Moves and picks up litter and roadway debris.
• Mows rights-of-way, picnic, and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance, including trimming trees and brush.
• Operates complex heavy equipment such as motor graders, large excavators, heavy bulldozers, cranes, herbicide trucks, heavy asphalt paving machines, self-propelled asphalt distributors, and profiling/milling machines.
• Operates heavy equipment such as front-end loaders (one and a half cubic yards or more), tractor-trailer haul trucks, large draglines, shovels, paint stripers, and dump trucks.
• Operates light equipment such as front-end loaders (one and a quarter cubic yards or less), pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers.

Transportation Maintenance Tech II (Additional Duties)

• Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; completes required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
• Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
• Performs work during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills (e.g., sanding/cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, assisting the public).

Transportation Maintenance Tech III (Additional Duties)

• Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• May serve as a work crew project lead, ensuring work meets project specifications.
• Trains other employees.
• Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites and assists stranded motorists.

Requirements

• Valid driver’s license at the time of application (position requires driving a state vehicle).
• Transportation Maintenance Tech I/II: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or obtain a CDL "A" License within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
• Transportation Maintenance Tech III: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or CDL "A" License at the time of application.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: None required.
• Experience:
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech I: None required.
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech II: 1 year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work.
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech III: 2 years of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work.

  Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent. Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat (below 32°F and above 100°F for more than one hour), noise, and vibration.
• Exposed to hazards such as moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals.
• Required to wear protective gear (e.g., respirator, hard hat, or other devices).
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Balancing: Walking, standing, or crouching on various surfaces without falling.
• Kneeling: Bending legs at the knee to rest on knee(s).
• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Standing: Prolonged periods of time.

• Close Visual Acuity: Work includes viewing data/figures, computer screens, extensive reading, operating machines (e.g., drill presses, power saws, mills), and operating motor vehicles and heavy equipment.

This position is identified as physically demanding and requires a pre-employment physical. It is also a Safety Impact position, requiring a pre-employment drug test and subject to random drug testing. Note that the Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation (49 CFR Part 40) does not authorize “medical marijuana” as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result.

Pay

• Transportation Maintenance Technician I (A16): $40,918 - $61,130 annually.
• Transportation Maintenance Technician II (A17): $42,976 - $64,469 annually.
• Transportation Maintenance Technician III (A18): $45,521 - $71,055 annually.
