About the role

The Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II, and III positions at TxDOT's Kermit Maintenance Office perform routine transportation operations and maintenance support work, including roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts.
  • Performs basic welding as needed.
  • Moves and picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites.
  • Assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Performs preventive maintenance (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accidents forms, and PMI.

Requirements

Education: No formal education required.

Experience:

  • TMT I: No experience required.
  • TMT II: 1 year experience.
  • TMT III: 2 years' experience.

Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license at the time of application. A Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or a CDL "A" License within 120 days of employment is required. An "N" endorsement must be obtained within 30 days of receiving a Class "A" CDL.

Preferred Qualifications: Commercial Driver’s License.

  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.

Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of: The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures, and applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
  • Proficient skill in: Operating light and heavy highway equipment, using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade, and using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Extensive Knowledge of: Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques, materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Proficient Skill in: Using basic mathematical fundamentals, operating light and heavy highway equipment, using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade, and using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Ability to: Communicate effectively, follow verbal and written instructions, and maintain a safe and effective working relationship with others.
