Transportation Maint Tech I/II

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work, including roadway maintenance and repair, equipment operation, preventive maintenance, traffic control, and public assistance during emergencies. Work involves contact with private entities and follows standard practices with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Assists local law enforcement at accident sites and stranded motorists as required.
• Performs traffic control duties: places and gathers cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic.
• Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves them as needed.
• Maintains highways and rights-of-way: performs roadway repairs, erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
• Operates complex heavy equipment, including motor graders, large excavators, heavy bulldozers, cranes, herbicide trucks, heavy asphalt paving machines, self-propelled asphalt distributors, and profiling/milling machines.
• Operates heavy equipment such as front-end loaders (1.5 cubic yards or more), tractor-trailer haul trucks, large draglines, shovels, paint stripers, and dump trucks.
• Operates light equipment such as front-end loaders (1.25 cubic yards or less), pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers.
• Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; completes required reports (time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI).
• Assists during emergency situations: sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, and helps the public during floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

Additional Responsibilities (Transportation Maintenance Tech II)

• Serves as the sole maintenance contract inspector on small projects.
• Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Performs highly skilled roadway repairs, including identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; performs welding and uses/moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
• Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications for roadways, bridges, traffic signals, and related structures.

Qualifications

• Education: No formal education required.
• Experience:
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech I (TMT I): No prior experience required.
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech II (TMT II): One year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work. Experience may be full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.
  Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Safety Impact Certificate (mandatory).
  • Commercial Driver Certificate (mandatory).
  • Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or obtain a CDL "A" License within 120 calendar days of employment.
  • U.S. Military CDL equivalent candidates must obtain a Texas Class "A" CDL within 120 days of employment.

Skills

• Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in transportation engineering construction and maintenance.
• Familiarity with applicable inspection methods, procedures, and techniques for highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
• Understanding of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance, including the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance, and repair procedures (TMT II).
• Proficiency in using hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
• Basic mathematical fundamentals and ability to prioritize and organize work assignments.
• Ability to operate light and heavy highway equipment.
• Strong interpersonal skills to maintain safe and effective working relationships.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Conditions of Employment

• Physically demanding role requiring a pre-employment physical.
• Required to work weekends, holidays, and hours outside of 8 AM to 5 PM.
• Exposure to inclement weather conditions; must wear provided personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements.
• May be contacted during off-duty hours to report to work for emergencies within one hour.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment; subject to random drug testing as this is a Safety Impact position. Note: "Medical marijuana" is not a valid explanation for a positive drug test result.
• Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergencies.

A Day in the Life

• Transportation Maintenance Tech I:
  • Sets up temporary traffic control.
  • Maintains drainage systems: digs and cleans ditches, repairs culverts, inlets, and erosion.
  • Clears debris, maintains wooded areas, clears brush, mows grass, and sprays roadside vegetation.
  • Repairs guardrails, concrete barriers, roadway delineators, milepost markers, and fences.
  • Assists the public during emergency situations.
• Transportation Maintenance Tech II (additional duties):
  • Operates a variety of equipment and performs manual labor to repair roadway surfaces and shoulders.
  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment requiring a Class "A" CDL.

Pay

• Transportation Maintenance Tech I (TMT I): $40,918 - $61,130 annually.
• Transportation Maintenance Tech II (TMT II): $42,976 - $64,469 annually.
