Transportation Maint Tech I/II

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work, including roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor equipment maintenance, traffic control, and public assistance during emergencies. Work involves contact with private entities and follows standard practices with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

Transportation Maintenance Tech I

• Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; performs basic welding as needed.
• Uses and moves equipment, tools, materials, and products related to maintenance activities.
• Provides support to law enforcement at accident sites and assists stranded motorists.
• Assists with traffic control: places and gathers cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic.
• Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves them as required.
• Inspects barricades for compliance with standards.
• Maintains picnic areas, rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
• Removes litter and roadway debris.
• Mows rights-of-way and picnic/rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance, including trimming trees and brush.
• Operates light equipment such as front-end loaders (1.25 cubic yards or less), pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers.
• Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; completes required reports (e.g., timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI).
• Performs other assigned job responsibilities.

Transportation Maintenance Tech II (includes all Tech I duties, plus):

• Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
• Operates heavy equipment such as front-end loaders (1.5 cubic yards or more), tractor-trailer haul trucks, large draglines, shovels, paint stripers, and dump trucks.

Requirements

• Valid driver’s license at the time of application (required to drive a state vehicle).
• Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or a CDL "A" License within 120 calendar days of employment.
• U.S. Military CDL equivalent accepted; candidates must obtain a Texas Class "A" CDL within 120 days of employment.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment and be subject to random drug testing (safety impact position).
• Must report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis for emergency situations.
• Must pass a pre-employment physical due to the physically demanding nature of the job.

Qualifications

Education: No formal education required.

Experience:

• Transportation Maintenance Tech I: No experience required.
• Transportation Maintenance Tech II: 1 year of transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.

Skills

• Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Basic mathematical fundamentals.
• Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments.
• Proficiency in using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
• Experience with hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
• Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
• Maintaining safe and effective working relationships with others.
• Effective communication and ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to environmental conditions with no protection from weather or temperature changes.
• Exposure to extreme cold (below 32°F) and heat (above 100°F) for more than one hour.
• Exposure to noise, vibration, and hazards (e.g., moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, chemicals).
• Exposure to atmospheric conditions (e.g., fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation).
• Required to wear protective gear (e.g., respirator, hard hat).
• Physical demands include:
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lifting or carrying objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing (ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps).
  • Balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • Standing for prolonged periods and walking long distances between work sites.
  • Pushing, pulling, and lifting objects.
  • Repetitive motion (substantial movements of wrists, hands, and/or fingers).
  • Talking and hearing at normal speaking levels for oral communication.

Conditions of Employment

• Required to work weekends, holidays, and hours outside of 8 AM–5 PM.
• Exposure to inclement weather conditions.
• Must wear employer-provided personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements.
• May be contacted during off-duty hours for emergency response (must report within one hour).
• This position is designated as physically demanding and requires a pre-employment physical.

Pay

• Transportation Maintenance Tech I: Salary Grade A16, $40,918 – $61,130.
• Transportation Maintenance Tech II: Salary Grade A17, $42,976 – $64,469.

Schedule

• Full-time.
