About the role
The Transportation Maintenance Tech I and II positions involve performing routine transportation operations and maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergency situations.
Responsibilities
- Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts;
- Performs basic welding as needed;
- Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris;
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way;
- Operates light and heavy equipment;
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment;
- Inspects routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship;
- Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems;
- Operates survey instruments and performs plant and landscape maintenance.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license at the time of application;
- Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or CDL "A” License within 120 days from date of employment;
- Considerable knowledge of applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques;
- Proficient skill in using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems;
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.;
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
- Physical requirements and working conditions include exposure to extreme cold and heat, noise and vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
Qualifications
- No formal education required;
- TMT I: No experience required;
- TMT II: 1 year experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience;
- Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Skills
- Some knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work;
- Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques;
- Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance;
- Maintenance concepts, methods, policies, and requirements;
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes;
- Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures;
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes;
- Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment;
- Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems;
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade;
- Using of light and heavy highway equipment;
- Maintaining a safe working relationship.
