Transportation Generalist -Highway Maintenance/Snow & Ice

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs daily and routine road surface maintenance activities to keep the roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair according to MnDOT standards. An employee assists in the maintenance and operation of snow and ice control to ensure safe and clear roadways, and performs related work as required.

Responsibilities

Performs Roadway Maintenance And Roadside Functions Such As:

• All activities required for roadside maintenance.
• All roadway surface maintenance activities.
• Services and makes minor repairs to operating equipment.
• Provides traffic control.
• Performs basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities.
• Other duties as required.

Performs Snow & Ice Functions Such As:

• Maintains roadways for snow and ice control.
• Prepares and inspects winter equipment.
• Performs pre-season snow route inspection and post-storm cleanup.
• Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals.
• Performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes.
• Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
• Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.

Requirements

• A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction is required at time of application. Must obtain tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire. License must be maintained throughout employment.
• One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
• Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. Transcripts must be submitted for education to be considered in lieu of work experience.
• Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Final candidate will receive a contingent job offer and will be required to pass a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. Previous passing scores may exempt candidates from retesting.

Additional Requirements

• Must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history check.
• Must submit to a Federal Department of Transportation pre-employment drug test (with negative test results) and be subject to future random drug and alcohol testing.
• Must be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
• Must be immediately accessible to a phone and able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
• Must be able to work nights and outside in various weather conditions (both hot and cold).
• Must drive a motor vehicle on roadways and roadsides, and walk on even and uneven sloping ground.
• Must frequently rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting).
• Must operate machinery and equipment under varying temperatures.
• Must be able to move between 75 and 100 pounds infrequently and 50 pounds frequently by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.
• Must wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
• Will be exposed to odors from herbicides and products used in roadway reconstruction.

Pay

$25.19 - $31.60 / hourly; $52,596 - $65,980 / annually

Schedule

• Winter season: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
• Summer season: Monday - Thursday, 6:30 am - 5:00 pm
• Day shift with additional winter snow and ice shifts and emergency call-ins as needed.
