Transportation Generalist - Highway Maintenance & Snow/Ice

Location: Baudette, MN

Full-time, unlimited position within the Transportation Department / District 2-AFSCME bargaining unit.

About the Role

Under general supervision, this position performs daily and routine road surface maintenance activities to keep roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair according to MnDOT standards. The role assists in the maintenance and operation of snow and ice control to ensure safe and clear roadways, and performs related work as required.

Responsibilities

Roadway Maintenance and Roadside Functions

• All activities required for roadside maintenance.
• All roadway surface maintenance activities.
• Services and makes minor repairs to operating equipment.
• Provides traffic control.
• Performs basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities.
• Other duties as required.

Snow & Ice Functions

• Maintains roadways for snow and ice control.
• Prepares and inspects winter equipment.
• Performs pre-season snow route inspection and post-storm cleanup.
• Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals.
• Installs, repairs, maintains, and removes snow fences; replaces mailboxes.
• Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
• Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.

Requirements

• A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction is required at time of application. Must obtain tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire. License must be maintained throughout employment.
• One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
• OR: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. Transcripts must be submitted for education to be considered in lieu of work experience.
• Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.
• Final candidate will receive a contingent job offer and must pass a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test (Math: level 3 or higher; Reading: level 4 or higher). Exemptions apply if previously passed.
• Must pass past-employer reference checks, criminal history check, and submit to a Federal Department of Transportation pre-employment drug test with negative results. Subject to future random drug and alcohol testing and registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
• Must be immediately accessible by phone and able to report to work within one hour of being called.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work nights, outside in varying weather conditions (hot and cold), and drive a motor vehicle on roadways and roadsides.
• Periodically walk on even and uneven sloping ground.
• Frequently rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting).
• Operate machinery and equipment under varying temperatures using vision and hearing.
• Infrequently move between 75 and 100 pounds and frequently move 50 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.
• Wear and use personal protective equipment to protect head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
• Exposure to odors from herbicides and roadway reconstruction products (e.g., bituminous or patchwork processes).

Pay

$25.19 - $31.60 / hourly; $52,596 - $65,980 / annually

Schedule

• Winter season: Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
• Summer season: Monday - Thursday, 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM
• Day shift with additional winter snow & ice shift as needed, including emergency call-ins.
