Transportation Engineer - Roadways
About the role
The Transportation Engineer plays a crucial role in planning, designing, and managing projects that enhance transportation systems. This includes highways, streets, bridges, tunnels, drainage structures, roadway lighting, airports, railroads, and commuter trains. The position involves assessing potential construction sites, checking existing structures for upgrades, creating detailed drawings and schematics using CAD software, approving and preparing proposals and cost estimates, and evaluating project progress.
Responsibilities
- Perform broad, varied, and diverse engineering design tasks on assigned projects under general supervision.
- Develop design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats, and prepare and revise documentation in various engineering phases including site plans, utility plan/profiles, grading plans, cross sections, diagrams, submittal reviews, and response to information requests.
- Aid senior engineers/designers with developing and managing the project scope, including cost estimates, budget, staffing, and schedule.
- Prepare portions of engineering project proposals, change orders, client contact, and communication pertaining to specific projects.
- Coordinate technical activities and designs with personnel in other disciplines and departments, serving as a liaison between senior engineer and design team.
- Conduct feasibility studies by analyzing engineering design, conducting environmental impact studies, and assembling data.
- Ensure adherence to construction specifications during each phase of a project, monitor project progress, inspect construction sites, and verify calculations and placements.
- Interpret and advise on unusual and difficult problems encountered in the transportation engineering practice.
- Apply advanced engineering principles and have a working knowledge of advanced technical research.
- Plan, conduct, and coordinate engineering assignments involving several smaller and some higher revenue projects of varying complexity.
Requirements
Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with an emphasis in Civil or Structural Engineering is required. Minimum of 4 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Professional Engineer (PE) license is required, and it must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
