About the role
Transportation Educational Assistants (Paraprofessionals) are assigned to vehicles transporting students with disabilities. They ensure the safe transport of students to and from home and supervise students during the entire route.
Responsibilities
- Clearly articulate expectations to students.
- Apply common-sense reasoning to behavioral situations.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community.
- Ensure prompt, regular attendance for scheduled assignments.
- Assist students on the bus: properly buckle seat belts, secure wheelchairs, 4-point harnesses, booster seats, and car seats.
- Verify all students are on the bus prior to departure.
- Occupy the seat that provides the best supervision and student protection while the bus is in transit.
- Observe all bus rider rules and maintain appropriate noise levels.
- Monitor students' behavior and needs; report concerns to the school, teacher(s), or district.
- Be familiar with the location and use of emergency equipment on the bus, including the 2-way radio.
- Know procedures for evacuating students during an emergency.
- Help students off the bus and check for articles left behind.
- Prepare forms requested by the district or school personnel.
- Maintain a roster on the bus with each child’s name, address, home phone number, and emergency contact; assist substitute personnel.
- Ensure all student information is kept confidential.
- Participate in annual training, including basic first aid and methods for dealing with the specific needs of students with disabilities.
Requirements
- High School Diploma (preference given to those with 60 college credits or completion of ParaPro exam).
- Experience working with or exposure to persons with disabilities is preferred.
Pay
$16.50 - $17.50 per hour
