About the Role

Under general supervision, this position answers phone calls requesting assistance and information, provides customer service, dispatches and schedules MPS transportation staff, and assists customers within the scope of authority. The role primarily supports AM Dispatch with scheduled hours from 4:30 AM to 1 PM.

Responsibilities

  • Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency calls; interviews callers and gathers details; relays information on traffic, timing, service locations, safety rules, state and Federal regulations, MPS policies and procedures, and standards for student behavior.
  • Provides general information and determines specific service needs via telephone; uses computerized scheduling system and manual systems as needed.
  • Directs callers to the correct person or work group, or takes and relays messages; handles radio traffic.
  • Prioritizes calls for service and determines appropriate personnel to respond.
  • Receives calls from MPS drivers and other staff regarding transportation issues; relays pertinent information concisely and maintains communications.
  • Assists with scheduling bus routes, stops, equipment assignments, field trips, and special events.
  • Notifies supervisors of unusual problems and problem trends.
  • Performs basic clerical duties, including data entry, document processing, record keeping, and file maintenance.
  • Coordinates dispatching of resources to resolve transportation service issues.
  • Inputs data into MPS computer systems for service requests, administrative information, activity logs, and other records; compiles data for reports.
  • Responds to emergencies and assists with emergency work as directed.
  • Reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, injuries, security issues, and illegal activities.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records, and MPS information.
  • May be required to work outside normal business hours or extended hours as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of customer service and computer experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by Human Resources.
  • Experience as an MPS School Bus Driver is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of record keeping and records management, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
  • Understanding of principles and practices of effective customer service, radio and telephone communications protocols, and local/regional geographical area and road systems.

Skills

  • Communicating clearly and concisely, relaying details accurately.
  • Entering data and numerical information into a computer system with speed and accuracy.
  • Reading and understanding route maps and schedule information.
  • Dealing tactfully and courteously with the general public, including attending to the special needs of children and parents.
  • Following verbal and written instructions.

Qualifications

  • A valid Minnesota State Commercial Driver’s License may be required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed in a standard office and customer service environment. The role may require occasional lifting of articles such as file boxes or heavier materials with assistance, frequent lifting and carrying of light objects, and significant walking, standing, or sitting with long periods of computer and heavy phone usage.

Pay

$30.47 - $32.67 per hour

Schedule

4:30 AM - 1 PM, Monday through Friday (full-time, 8 hours daily).
