About the role

Under general supervision, answers phone calls requesting assistance and information; interviews callers and provides customer service information; dispatches and schedules MPS transportation staff as directed; provides information and assistance to customers within the scope of authority.

Essential Functions

  • Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency calls; interviews callers and gathers details; relays information on traffic, timing, service locations, safety rules, state and Federal regulations, MPS policies and procedures, and standards for student behavior.
  • Answers customer service telephone, provides general information, and determines specific service needs; uses computerized scheduling system and manual systems as needed; provides information within the scope of authority and training; duties may vary according to job assignment.
  • Directs callers to the correct person or work group, or takes and relays messages as appropriate; also handles radio traffic.
  • Prioritizes calls for service and determines appropriate personnel to respond.
  • Receives calls from MPS drivers as well as contracted drivers, and other MPS staff regarding transportation issues; relays pertinent information concisely and organized; maintains communications as necessary.
  • Assists with scheduling bus routes, stops, equipment assignments, field trips, and special events.
  • Notifies supervisors of unusual problems and problem trends.
  • Performs basic clerical duties, including data entry, document processing, record keeping, and file maintenance.
  • Coordinates dispatching of resources to resolve transportation service issues as needed.
  • Inputs data to MPS computer systems on service requests, administrative information, activity logs, asset information, and other Transportation Department records; compiles data for reports.
  • Responds to emergencies and assists with emergency work as directed.
  • Reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries; reports security issues and illegal activities.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent's goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records, and MPS information.
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis.
  • At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish the requirements of the position.

Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND one (1) year of customer service and computer experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by Human Resources. Experience as an MPS School Bus Driver is preferred.

Knowledge Of:

  • Basic principles of record keeping and records management.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Principles and practices of effective customer service.
  • Radio & telephone communications protocols.
  • Local and regional geographical area and road systems.

Skill In:

  • Communicating clearly and concisely, and relaying details accurately.
  • Entering data and numerical information into a computer system with speed and accuracy.
  • Reading and understanding route maps and schedule information.
  • Dealing tactfully and courteously with the general public.
  • Attending to the special needs of children and parents.
  • Following verbal and written instructions.

License and Certification Requirements

A valid Minnesota State Commercial Driver's License may be required.

Pay, Schedule & Benefits

Salary Range: $30.47 - $32.67

Schedule: 11 AM - 7:30 PM

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is performed in a standard office and customer services environment, which requires occasional lifting of articles such as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.
