About the role
The Director of Transportation, a member of the administrative team, is responsible for the hiring, supervision, and training of transportation staff. They also oversee the maintenance of the school department's fleet of vehicles.
Responsibilities
- Report to and work with the Superintendent of Schools, the administrative team, and the school committee regarding transportation issues such as scheduling, needed repairs, routine maintenance, etc.
- Supervise all transportation staff, including hiring, scheduling, finding substitutes, conducting evaluations, ensuring certifications and physicals are up-to-date, etc.
- Develop and implement bus routes and driver schedules, including those for substitutes and extracurricular activities.
- Manage the purchase and maintenance of school transportation vehicles, including upkeep of registration and insurance.
- Research and present cost-effective maintenance and upgrade options to the Superintendent of Schools.
- Prepare and present the annual departmental budget.
- Review and prepare all departmental invoices for payment.
- Attend classes, professional development, and training as needed or requested, and apply the knowledge gained.
- Communicate effectively with staff, families, and vendors through both verbal and written means.
- Maintain a positive attitude and work relationship with all school department constituents.
- Perform office administrative duties, including answering the phone and checking answering machines as needed.
- Support and train drivers to ensure safe driving practices.
- Communicate student behavior issues and concerns with the building administrator.
Requirements
- High school diploma or HiSET
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent written communication skills
- Supervisory experience
- Ability to work independently, as a member of a team, and as a department leader
- General knowledge of vehicle maintenance and systems
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and appropriate relationships with staff, students, and parents, as well as outside vendors
- Able to maintain confidentiality about all aspects of student and staff information
