Transmission System Operator Intern
About the role
AEP is seeking a Transmission Operator to join our team. This is a year-round position requiring a 45-minute drive from the work location.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and regulate system voltage levels, real and reactive power flows for the transmission system at all transmission voltage levels in cooperation with directives of the AEP SCC.
- Operate the AEP transmission system in coordination with the AEP SCC and appropriate neighboring utilities.
- Operate distribution equipment inside the station fence in coordination with regional distribution dispatch centers.
- Prepare and direct switching operations for equipment removal/restoration during maintenance, repair, and construction.
- Monitor system voltages, transformer/line/equipment loadings, and apply corrective action when deviations occur.
- Maintain logs of operating conditions and initiate corrective action upon malfunction of metering and communication facilities.
- Monitor weather information systems for severe weather and notify relevant personnel.
- Input records of station entry/exit activity and acknowledge such entries.
Requirements
- High School diploma and currently enrolled in a two-year technical degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.
- Minimum GPA of 2.7 (B-) and transcripts must be provided for verification.
- Valid state driver’s license.

- Ability to work under pressure during critical system conditions and handle diverse situations simultaneously.
- Ability to analyze information and communicate instructions clearly and concisely.
- Ability to work on a twelve-hour rotating shift schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work a minimum of 20 hours a week during the school year and 40 hours a week during the summer.
- Must be within a 45-minute drive of the AEP work location.
- Must have the ability to report to the worksite promptly for emergency events.
- Must have a thorough knowledge and use of safety procedures.
- Must be able to effectively and professionally interact with co-workers and customers.
Skills
- Knowledge of transmission system operation and maintenance.
- Ability to operate SCADA systems and related functions.
- Experience with relaying, metering, and communication facilities.
- Strong analytical and communication skills.

Pay
$31.00 per hour
Schedule
This is a year-round position requiring a twelve-hour rotating shift schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays. A minimum of 20 hours a week during the school year and 40 hours a week during the summer is required.
Physical Demands
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently.
