About the role
Dominion Energy is seeking a highly motivated engineering student to join the Transmission Engineering team for a summer internship. The internship provides hands‑on exposure to surveying, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the electric transmission system (33 kV – 230 kV) that powers homes, businesses, and communities. Interns work alongside engineers and technicians on real‑world projects supporting grid reliability, receive professional development, and gain insight into a career in the electric utility industry.
Responsibilities
- Support transmission engineering projects involving high‑voltage transmission lines and associated facilities.
- Develop bills of material and prepare material requisitions.
- Assist with PLS‑CADD design and create AutoCAD drawings.
- Review encroachment and T&D joint‑use requests to ensure compliance with Dominion’s requirements.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
- Utilize engineering software (PLS‑CADD, AutoCAD, MFAD, etc.), GIS tools, and Microsoft Office applications to support project work.
- Participate in field visits to transmission lines, substations, and construction sites to observe utility operations and engineering practices.
- Collaborate with engineers and operations teams on project tasks.
- Apply Dominion Energy’s safety, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship standards.
- Support storm restoration efforts as needed.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an ABET‑accredited Bachelor’s program majoring in Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Expected graduation date in 2028 or 2029.
- AutoCAD experience or completion of relevant coursework.
- Eligibility to work in the United States without employer sponsorship (the company cannot transfer or sponsor a work visa for this position).
Skills
- Proficiency with AutoCAD.
- Familiarity with PLS‑CADD, MFAD, and GIS tools.
- Competence in Microsoft Office applications.
Pay
Hourly rate: $27.00 – $29.00 (actual rate may vary based on academic major and classification).
