Transitional Teacher (Elementary).
About the Role
As a Transitional Teacher (Elementary), you will provide instruction at the professional level as a classroom teacher, team teacher, or remedial/special services teacher. You will plan, implement, and evaluate instructional activities under established guidelines, preparing yearly instructional outlines and daily lesson plans that cover relevant units of study and specify objectives, activities, and evaluative methods for both group and individual programs.
Responsibilities
- Teach students by selecting, developing, adapting, and implementing appropriate instructional methods and techniques using available resources to ensure academic achievement.
- Provide learning experiences in assigned subject areas that develop cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills tailored to the needs and interests of all students.
- Continuously evaluate individual and group academic progress using criterion-referenced tests, periodic standardized tests, oral tests, and other relevant evaluative methods.
- Use alternative instruction to meet individual student needs.
- Prepare and deliver progress reports to parents and confer with parents and other concerned individuals regarding student behavior and progress.
- Maintain required records in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Maintain control of assigned class and handle discipline independently, except for chronic or extreme behavior problems.
- Counsel individual students within established guidelines, using background information to provide an effective instruction-learning cycle related to students' behavior and progress.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered under the Military Selective Service Act and the Defense Authorization Act of 1986.
- A background security investigation will be required for all new hires; appointment is subject to successful completion of this investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Must be willing to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle as an incidental duty; a valid driver’s license is required.
- Must enroll in an Alternative Licensure program to obtain and maintain valid teacher licensure/certification in the state where the position is located and in the specialty field identified by the job posting (e.g., elementary, mathematics, special education).
- Will be placed on provisional status for three contract terms while enrolled and participating in the Alternative Licensure program.
- This position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Probationary period is one academic year (two full academic semesters) during which fitness and continued employment will be evaluated.
- Initial appointments under Public Law 95-561 do not confer competitive nor career status.
Qualifications
To qualify, you must meet the following education and licensure requirements:
- Possess a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) from an accredited educational institution.
- Provide proof of enrollment in a local state’s alternative teaching licensure/certification program within 90 days of the start date of the position. Enrollment must be for the appropriate endorsement/subject field as identified in the job posting (e.g., elementary, mathematics, special education).
- Applicants with DODEA certification may work directly with states for reciprocity licensure and are not required to enroll in an Alternative Licensure program unless mandated by the state.
To meet the education requirements, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts (official or unofficial). Official transcripts are required upon selection. Ensure transcripts are not locked or encrypted and that all pages, including the transcript key, are viewable. Education must be obtained from an accredited or pre-accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For foreign education, credentials must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to a U.S. accredited program.
Pay
Pay setting is based on degree and limited to Pay Level 14. Pay is determined after the selection process and is non-negotiable. The pay structure is as follows:
- Pay Level 11: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree.
- Pay Level 12: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 15 graduate semester hours.
- Pay Level 13: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 30 graduate semester hours.
- Pay Level 14: Requires a Master’s Degree.
Education must be in coursework related to the topic being taught or general teaching methodologies. Experience is considered for determining pay increments for comparable experience, including paid, unpaid, and volunteer work. Your resume must clearly describe relevant experience to be considered for pay. The maximum number of years creditable for pay setting is 17. The per-hour rate for teacher positions will be modified based on the school calendar for the location (Modified Hourly/Date Rate, or MHR/MDR).

This position is covered by a bargaining unit (Federation of Indian Service Employees, American Federation of Teachers Local 4521). Government quarters may be available. Direct deposit of pay is required. Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid, and no recruitment incentive is offered.
